Growing up in Brighton you’d think things would be more progressive than many places, and that is true in some cases, but as a 14 year old I’ve witnessed many kids say offensive language. A good day for our seas! On the 24th of March 2021 a new law – The Nearshore Trawling Byelaw – was approved by the UK Government. It sounds rather dry, but it couldn’t be wetter! The law made it illegal to use bottom trawling fishing practices between Shoreham and Selsey… and our beautiful Sussex coast is already the better for it. Bottom trawling is an incredibly destructive way of fishing which has been used extensively on our coast line since the 80’s. Huge fishing nets are weighed down with several tons of metal, and then dragged along the seafloor in order to catch crabs, lobsters and bottom feeding fish like plaice. AA Sessions began as a revolving door of musicians in the summer of 2018. Inspired by Josh Homme’s Desert Sessions, whoever appeared that week at Agricultural Audio - a rural studio just outside Lewes in the South Downs - had to write and record a song that day. Contributors included members of Blood Red Shoes, Projector, Sick Joy, Nancy, Tigercub, Sweet Williams, Ergo Schmidt and AKDK, each of whom contributed to an initial EP of irreverent synth-laced grooves and off-kilter bangers. How can one challenge the ideas of society unless you find others to back you up - to join their voice to yours? This is not a new concept, but in the context of the pandemic, it is one that is being questioned on all fronts. Is public opinion more important than public health? Pells Pool in Lewes is the oldest freshwater outdoor swimming pool in England, established in 1861, its 160th consecutive swimming season opened last year. Facilities include changing rooms, disabled access, sun terrace and lawn, toilets, warm and cold showers and a kiosk selling snacks. The pool is 50 yards long and 25 yards wide and fed by spring water below the baths. It’s incredibly popular with locals but would also make a perfect end to a hot day out in Lewes. Sessions are an hour and you’ll need to book in advance. Another outdoor pool worth a visit, including its Art Deco architecture, is Saltdean Lido, a short ride from Brighton and is the only Grade 2 listed Lido in the UK. Who are South Lanes Studios? Founded in November 2019 by three university students, the doors to South Lanes Studios originally opened in early 2020. Despite having to close the studio during the lockdown caused by COVID-19, Meg, Luke and Sam were still hard at work, using this time to research soundproofing and source equipment. With a clear vision of what they wanted, even while working toward their degrees the group planned to reopen bigger and better than ever. If you’re anything like me, a barbecue consists of burgers and sausages and nothing else. The fact that some of them will be meat and some will be vegetarian options, makes me think I’m twice as accomplished as a barbecue chef, but clearly cooking a burger, whether meat or seitan, is still just putting a disc of food on a hot grill and occasionally lifting it up and putting it back down again until it’s black, and the sun’s been down for two hours. While all British galleries had to close their doors in the last 18 months, Brighton CAA suffered the particular indignity of hosting a ‘ghost show’. Celebrated German painter Katharina Wulff was ready to present her first UK solo show, Media Dreams, with paintings hung and waiting for an audience. “You can see pictures of it on the website, but nobody was ever allowed in,” says Ben Roberts, Brighton CCA‘s Artistic Director. “It was a shame, because it was a beautiful show.” With restrictions easing, the gallery did succeed in bringing the vibrant work of Flo Brooks to the city.
