THAT’S A BIG ONE
The largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter, is roughly 318 times as massive as Earth. While it has a mean radius of 69,911 km, its rapid rotation causes it to bulge. Its equator’s diameter is 142,984 km, while only 133,708 km at the poles. Composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, Jupiter weighs 1.9 x 1027 kilograms, but possesses only 1/5 the density of Earth. The surface area of Jupiter is 6.1419x1010 km2, 120 times that of our planet, while its volume is 1,431,281,810,739,360 cubic km3 - 1,321 times that of Earth. This gas giant’s structure resembles our Sun but would need 75x its present mass to see fusion of hydrogen which fuels a star.
