1 When it was time to harvest our garden, I hung the onions, garlic and herbs in the garage to dry for a couple of months. My wife pickled the carrots, beans and cucumbers and froze as much as she could. Best of all, we would throw big harvest feasts for family—everything on the menu came from the garden. Plus, everyone got to take a care package of fresh stuff home.

2 When the potatoes, lettuce and spinach begin to play out in the summer heat, they make room for okra, green beans, tomatoes, squash and peppers.
