NATURAL HISTORY
This remarkable map depicting part of Guatemala, entitled Relación Geográfica Map of Santiago Atitlán, was created in the 16th century by an unknown artist. As European explorers made their way to Latin America, the region became seen as, variously, a heavenly paradise, a scientific project and a source of vast material wealth. A new exhibition in San Marino, California, aims to make sense of these competing views, exploring related art, geography, science and religion. A companion book to the exhibition, written by co-curator Daniela Bleichmar and published by Yale, is also out now.
