THE WALLIS ANNENBERG WILDLIFE Crossing, construction of which started in April 2022, is now standing in Liberty Canyon, in California’s Santa Monica mountains. This feat of sustainable engineering will reconnect habitats bisected by the 10-lane 101 Freeway, providing a living lifeline for the mammals and reptiles on either side. It’s hoped the crossing will also act as a global model for urban wildlife conservation.
The bridge is being built mainly to protect California’s mountain lions (also known as pumas and cougars), whose gene pool has been restricted by habitat fragmentation, but will also benefit a range of other species, from bobcats, coyotes, mule deer and black bears to desert cottontail rabbits, skunks, American badgers, California bats, Pacific gopher snakes and crocodile lizards.
