Tawny Owl

The competition’s inaugural year, with Clive’s portrait of a tawny owl feeding its young winning the first Grand Title award, presented by David Attenborough. Wildlife Photographer of the Year was initially a magazine contest launched by BBC Wildlife (then Animals). That first year, the contest had three categories aimed at a predominantly British audience, and drew 361 entries.

This spectacular image, depicting a gemsbok silhouetted against the stark, sweeping dunes of the Namib Desert, is one of the most iconic in the competition’s history. Jim, from Minnesota, USA, went on to become Chairman of the Judges in 2012, a position he held until 2014.
