NATURE LOVERS CAN HARDLY WAIT FOR the return of sand martins this month, because these little birds sound the mighty klaxon of spring. They’re reliably among the first so-called ‘summer’ migrants to arrive back in Britain from Africa, generally in the first two weeks of March. The places where sand martins first appear are reliable, too – marshes, lakes, rivers… anywhere with fresh water, basically. At times, the martins can be hard to make out, as they fly low over the water, but listen out for their non-stop twittering calls.
