Today, an estimated 800 elephants are held captive in India’s temples, especially in the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Between December and May, there are about 3,000 festivals, including the massive Thrissur Pooram, in which the animals are forced to parade.
“They are deprived of food, water and shelter,” explains Sangita Iyer, filmmaker and founder of Voice For Asian Elephants Society. “They can die during transportation, or of heat exhaustion. When they’re not on parade, they’re shackled and forced to stand in their own waste, leading to disease. Every year, an average of 25-30 elephants die due to neglect and brutality.
