Progress in powertrain technology is a lot like London buses. Not painfully slow, often late and with a strong eau-du-vom, but tends to arrive in twos and threes. Of course, certain leaps in tech and off-the-shelf components will always unlock new applications at a point in time, but the fact that the first three hybrid hypercars – McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder and LaFerrari – all went into production within a few months of each other in 2013 still baffles me. As does BMW and Mercedes coming up with the idea for a switchable 4WD/RWD system for the latest M5 and E63 at precisely the same moment, or Gordon Murray and Aston Martin fancying a last hurrah, high revving, naturally aspirated V12 and asking Cosworth to do the honours… simultaneously.…

This, ladies and gents, is the Hoonifox. Utilising the largely unloved third-generation Mustang (1979–1993), it’s the latest FrankenFord from Ken and his drifty disciples at Hoonigan Racing. Set to be used in the 11th instalment of his Gymkhana series, Ken has enlisted the help of Ash Thorpe, the man behind the new Batmobile, to design the louvre-tastic beefcake. Inspired by Eighties motorsport and Ken’s very own ’65 Hoonicorn Mustang, its track has been pumped out for squat and boxy dimensions, while modern WRC-inspired overfenders have been bolted on to give it shoulder pads. Lamborghini is very much open for business. Allow us to present the Huracán Evo RWD Spyder; an opentop version of a car we’re rather fond of. That car being the Evo RWD Coupe, and this Spyder promises the same penchant for skids its sibling demonstrates in amusing fashion. Says it all on the box, really: being rear drive, there are no front driveshafts, so it’s lighter – 1,509kg dry. Shorn of traction and a roof, the 0–62mph sprint takes 3.5secs (3.3secs for the Coupe), which in today’s world is what you can probably get out of a tuned hot hatch. Lava Me Pro The Lava Me Pro may be an ultra-modern, tech-filled carbon-fibre guitar, but that turbo button is straight out of the Eighties. Press it just before you shred a solo and it’ll make the thing 50 per cent louder and 100 per cent more attractive to the opposite sex. Granted, the Pro is expensive, but there’s a whole lot going on to justify the four-figure price. Take the built-in preamp courtesy of sound wizards LR Baggs, which allows you to play with effects like delay, reverb & chorus without a pedalboard. Then there’s the materials. Get it wrong and a stock of 2020 calendars would’ve been a better investment What’s on the shopping list? First you need an actual turbocharger with a manifold it can bolt onto. You’ll need an oil feed to lubricate it, and a filter on the front to stop it from inhaling small animals. Now your air is compressed, the next item is an intercooler. Although not strictly necessary, cooling the charge temp is a very good idea. Pressurising air increases its temperature. The tiny principality of Monaco is inextricably linked with F1 racing. In 1989, Sega took advantage of that fact, by avoiding licensing any official F1 teams or drivers and instead opting to slap the word Monaco on its brand new arcade cabinet and hope for the best. Ironically, the seemingly inevitable legal action didn’t come from McLaren, whose car was ‘borrowed’ for the occasion, but from its sponsor, US tobacco company Philip Morris International. It’s no secret that saloon-ified versions of hatchbacks exist mainly for the American and Chinese markets, but, of course, we get most of them over here too. Quite why you’d buy one over the equivalent better-looking, more practical, often cheaper hatchback is beyond us. But maybe the new Audi A3 saloon will be the car that changes our minds. The engines and tech are exactly the same as the new A3 Sportback, and while the old A3 saloon always looked a bit stubby to us, this new one appears better proportioned. Expect Audi to do a long-wheelbase version for the Chinese, who value decent rear legroom above all else. The original Automobilista is the best racing sim you’ve never heard of, known for its tactile handling model, unique selection of cars and tracks and the fact that it was built on ancient, creaking technology. This PC-only sequel fixes that last one, borrowing the slick graphics tech from Project CARS 2. What persists is a selection of content that no other sim would ever bother replicating, such as the official Brazilian stock car championship or a race-prepared Fiat Uno. While that might sound like the racing game equivalent of a bag of offal, there’s recognisable stuff and every vehicle has been lavished with attention, making hustling them a fabulously physical experience. Well, I was born too late.
