5th: The US poet Phillis Wheatley dies aged 31. Born in west Africa and sold into slavery as a child, Phillis’s fortunes changed when she was bought by the Wheatley family of Boston, who taught her how to read and write. When, in 1773, her Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral went to press, she became the first African-American poet to have her work published. Despite her fame, however, she died in abject poverty.
