Music is not short of those who enjoy messing about on the river. Few, however, can have brought as much joy to it as the choral scholars of King’s College, who, in 1965, formed a ‘Choir VIII’ rowing crew to take part in the Cambridge ‘May Bumps’ college races – with, admittedly, limited success.
‘I for one had never rowed before,’ recalls alto Alastair Hume. ‘Mucking about on a lake is one thing, wielding an oar constantly at speed for what seemed like an eternity was quite another.’ Over four days, the Choir VIII got ‘bumped’ (i.e. lost) three times, but at least did so with a song. ‘We would sing “Forth in Thy Name, O Lord, We Row” on the towpath before the race,’ says Hume, ‘and had a…
