For the choristers of New College, Oxford, in the mid-1980s, recording a new disc was considered hardly a big deal. When it came to Handel’s oratorio Athalia with the AAM, though, the reaction was a little different. Singing the part of Joas, we were told, was Aled Jones, superstar choirboy who had recently been in the charts with ‘Walking in the Air’ – would he come and say hello, we wondered, or even join us for a lunchtime kickabout? In fact, he did neither (our schedules didn’t overlap) though soprano Emma Kirkby (Josabeth), countertenor James Bowman (Joad) and Christopher Hogwood himself came to chat to us between takes.
