I’m always amazed by the treasures that record labels find, sometimes in the most unlikely of places, and we’re receiving more and more decades-old recordings that have largely gone unreleased. For the most part they aren’t reissues, but they’re certainly not ‘new’ either, so this month we have a ‘Historical’ round-up page, gathering the very best of recent archival releases.
Very much in the here and now are composers Cheryl Frances Hoad, Kaija Saariaho, Thea Musgrave and Robin Holloway, and each has music reviewed this month, though composers from the past have plenty of column inches, too. Highlights include Purcell’s opera King Arthur, a glorious disc of Italian Cantatas by Handel, and two very fine recordings of piano works by Liszt and Brahms.
