No one knows castles better than John Goodall. His earlier book The English Castle (2011, also published by Yale) was a magisterial and monumental survey of its subject, clocking in at 480 pages and weighing more than 3kg. This new volume, by contrast, is a somewhat lighter affair. We are presented with just over 100 chapters, each focused on a particular castle (or, occasionally, a group of castles) at a significant moment in its history – a royal visit, a siege, a great rebuilding, etc. The chapters are arranged chronologically, advancing from the Norman Conquest to the present day.
