One of the most enduring memories of the trip were the gardens in Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine, where every inch of space was used to grow fruit and vegetables for the family. How to make a plant display for your bathroom Air plants are some of the best plants to style in a terrarium vessel because they need a lot of humidity. They are also one of the easiest plants to create a terrarium with because, one, you’re not potting the plant in the vessel, so you can take it out when it’s time to water it and, two, you don’t have to worry about soil, you have so many more options for how to style it. Whether you’re weeding, transporting plants or moving heavy landscape materials, there’s no doubt a wheelbarrow will help you bear the load. A useful addition to a gardener’s tool shed, wheelbarrows allow us to move around the garden with ease no matter what we’re doing. Barrows typically have one wheel and a metal tray, although different sizes, styles and materials are increasingly used, and the type of barrow you’ll need will depend on the jobs you do most. Eco labels to arrive on compost bags next spring A long-awaited labelling scheme for compost, listing ingredients and rating them on how eco-friendly they are, is to appear on bags next season. The labels will use a coloured ‘petal’ symbol to rate compost brands from A to E, giving an at-a-glance green rating similar to energy ratings on household appliances. Compost that contains peat, due to be banned from bagged potting compost after 2024 under Government proposals, will score no higher than D, says Steve Harper, chair of the industry-wide Responsible Sourcing Scheme. “But we want to make sure that as we move forward we’re adding materials that are better for the environment than peat.” The scheme rates all ingredients, including peat substitutes like coir and wood fibre, against seven…

We launched our Put Pollinators First campaign in March because we were worried about the alarming fall in pollinator numbers and knew you’d want to help. We knew if we could engage you with gardening for pollinators, it would create a huge network of support. STEP BY STEP Split herbaceous perennials Rejuvenate herbaceous plants, such as hostas, by lifting them out of the border and dividing them. Replant in the same spot or move them into another part of the garden. The outer growth on the clump is the youngest, so keep those pieces, discarding the older, less productive pieces from the middle. Before replanting, make sure the area is thoroughly weeded and add bone-meal fertiliser to encourage root growth. The weather should still be mild enough for the newly planted divisions to take root, but if the ground is really cold wait until spring before dividing. 1 CUT down through the soil in a circle around the clump with a spade and lift the plant out onto the border, keeping the rootball intact. 2 EXAMINE…

Before loading the wheelbarrow, position it in the direction you plan to push so you don’t need to lift it and immediately turn. On a hill, load it with the barrow pointing up or down the slope, otherwise the barrow will topple over. Load the tray evenly but with the majority of the weight towards the front, over the wheel, so that it’s easier to lift. Always lift a barrow with bent knees and straight arms, and don’t be tempted to overfill it despite the capacity it is capable of carrying – lift only what you are comfortable with.…

Worry not, gentle readers, this is not the case – it is all perfectly natural and anyway, one should never make personal remarks! This Asian tree is generally quite gorgeous, but it has two particular crescendoes – firstly in June when the small greenish flowers are enlivened by stunning white bracts and secondly right now as the leaves begin to turn to flaming orange and reds. As you read this, COP26 – the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference, held every five years – will be underway in Glasgow. But, however successful or productive it is, none of the issues of climate change will have been solved or disappeared. Climate change, and its effects on our lives, is not something we can wish away. Every person alive on this planet will have to deal with it for the rest of their days. The young plants need plenty of light to grow, so choose the brightest and warmest spot in the greenhouse or on your windowsill.
