September is a benign month, bestowing a golden grace on all gardens with the gentleness of its light. This can still be summer-warm from the sun but is tinged with the tapestry hues of autumn, and as the month progresses the colours fade and the light gets lower, slanting in through the thinning hedgerows. As a result, the rich colours seem velvety, while there is also a gauzy translucence to the more subtle shades.
But while the flower garden is slipping into autumn, the vegetable garden is at its most productive. September is, above all others, the month of harvest, both of fresh vegetables and those that will store throughout winter.
