Missed a step?
I work at a volunteer-run tree nursery in Brighton, and reading your feature Save and sow tree seeds (What to do now, November issue), I thought you had omitted an important step. Using your example of spindle seeds, it is best to remove the outer orange coating prior to placing them in a bag and refrigerating them.
As a general principle, when we gather fleshy seeds, the outer layer should always be removed before stratifying. Lastly, when gathering tree seeds from the wild, it is important to take only a nominal amount from any tree, around 10 per cent, leaving the rest to be harvested by wildlife, or to germinate naturally.
