■ To discover which acorns will grow, put them in a pan of water. The ones that sink are viable. Toddlers usually find this step to be great fun. They do enjoy water play—and acorns like being wet before they're planted. ■ Plant the acorns sideways and have your child cover them with about an inch of soil. ■ Water them well. ■ Then set the pots outside, keeping the soil wet only until the cold weather arrives. ■ You won't need to water again until spring.
