DIP FINISH European Athletics described the media and spectator interest in the European Athletics Championships in Rome as “phenomenal”. The governing body says Italian channel RAI 2 attracted more than two million viewers for June 11, the day upon which Gianmarco Tamberi and Nadia Battocletti struck gold for the host nation.
In France, television figures reached 1.8 million on June 13 and, in Germany, evening coverage on June 14 hit 4.1 million viewers on the flagship ARD channel.
It wasn’t all good news, though. Crowds in the stadium were thin for most sessions, or at least looked that way in the cavernous 72,000 capacity stadium.
