Which event is stronger - Commonwealth Games or European Championships?
While the European Championships can’t, of course, feature either Jamaican or African athletes, the winning marks in Munich were superior to Birmingham in 27 of 44 events, with one being equal.
Track standards were similar, though the times in the Commonwealth men’s 200m (19.80), 1500m (3:30.12), 5000m (13:08.68) and 10,000m (27:09.19), as well as the women’s 200m (22.03) and 100m hurdles (12.30), stood out. When it came to the field events, however, it was no surprise that, as ever, the standards were better at the Europeans.
The only field events where Birmingham was better were the world class quality in the men’s shot (Tom Walsh’s 22.26m), javelin (Arshad Nadeem’s 90.18m) and women’s hammer (Camryn Rogers’ 74.08m).
