In some ways Marc Fish is like other designer makers: hard working, full of passion and ideas, wanting to progress, and concerned about his bottom line. But in other ways, Marc is different. He never uses solid wood to make anything but exclusively uses laminated veneers and non-wood materials, and looks to develop a progressive or innovative technique at least annually. Engaging young people in the workshop can be difficult when you are competing with screens. I have found that my own children are interested in what I’m doing in the workshop, but lose motivation if they are not able to quickly create items that have meaning for them. They are not interested in furniture, spice racks or lamps. What they do like are projects such as billy carts, percussion instruments and spinning tops, because they have real world uses. The Lego people shown above immediately attracted the interest of children, and lots of adults too. Writers sometimes refer to a ‘machine base’ or ‘mobility kit’ but rarely mention castor specs. Born September 17, 1943, Pru Ingham was a designer maker and teacher of woodworking who sadly passed away last year. She died as she wished, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 2022. Pru was born in Sydney at the height of World War II and spent her childhood in the Blue Mountains. She learned violin from an early age and always had ‘clever hands’ for crafts and making things. She went on to study music at Sydney University as part of an Arts degree, but left before completing her degree. The new machine arrived at the workshop well packaged on its own sturdy pallet. Weighing in at a hefty 1250 kgs, our forklift was just able to unload it safely. The T54 has a total table length of 2840mm, 500mm bed widths and gives a maximum 8mm depth of cut. Our model has the control panel on the lower right, just above knee height (there are other options). There is a sturdy metal bump guard around the control panel which has a prominent emergency stop button in the middle. The on/off switch activates a soft-start function with no star/delta on the 7.5hp three-phase motor. The machine reaches working speed within five seconds. Materials, ideas, relationships – when things go together well, good things can happen. Louen Pinpin was last year’s Bowls & Boxes category winner for Maker of the Year Awards. His unique Soil and Sea box design incorporated a flexible lid solution that incorporated veneer, paper and leather. The idea and technique for making it was a product of his skills combined with his own innovation and that of Laura Inguaggiato. Late last year, after an intense year of study and hands-on practice, the 12 full-time students at Sturt School for Wood were ready to show the fruits of their endeavour to the world. Cambium is the layer of fibrous tissue found just below the bark of a tree, and also the place where new cell types form. It was chosen as the name of the students’ end-of-year exhibition, to reflect their journey of growth, and the fact they were now ready to branch out.
