This photo was taken at our cover shoot with Nicola Willis. Securing time to photograph politicians can be tricky, given their packed schedules, so we always try to get the shots as quickly as possible. In the interests of efficiency, I sometimes step up as a stand-in “model” to test the lighting and composition before the real shoot begins. It’s not glamorous, but it does help speed things up. The shoot didn’t start until 3pm, so I knew I wouldn’t be home to my “second job” – aka Mum Life – until later that evening. Like many working parents, I’d prepared everything in advance: dinner was made and ready to serve, the school uniform was clean and laid out, my bag for a trip away the next day was already…

A heady smell of sandalwood hits you as soon as Noni Hazlehurst opens the door to her home on Queensland’s Macleay Island. The self-confessed “old hippy” regularly burns incense which wafts throughout the airy bungalow. The next sense to awaken is sight as you take in her open-plan living space. A huge portrait of Noni, heavily pregnant with second son William, takes pride of place in a reading nook. When Rebecca Sharrock was 13 years old, she pulverised her two front teeth. Almond friands MAKES 4 PREP + COOK TIME 45 MINUTES 2 egg whites 60g butter, melted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1⁄3 cup (40g) almond meal ½ cup (80g) icing sugar, sifted 2 tablespoons plain flour 1 tablespoon flaked almonds 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced). Grease four oval friand pans (⅓ cup, 80ml) line the bases with baking paper. Place tins on a small oven tray. 2 Place egg whites in a small bowl and whisk lightly. Add butter, vanilla, almond meal, icing sugar and flour; whisk until combined. 3 Spoon mixture evenly into friand tins, sprinkle with the flaked almonds. 4 Bake for 20 minutes.
