SOUTH FREMANTLE IS THE kind of place where you’ll find a book exchange on one street, and spot locals raiding a mulberry tree on another. MY FIRST INTRODUCTION to the Adelaide Fringe took place under a canopy of festoon lighting and gum trees in a sequin-fuelled sequence of madcap encounters at the Garden of Unearthly Delights. Within the first three hours I’d engaged in an existential conversation, via text messages, with a lemon-scented gum, got cosy with some naughty nanas played by Melbourne comics Thomas Jaspers and Kyle Minall in their retro caravan, and allowed myself to be spooked by spirits – well, some very clever sound art – in a pitch-black shipping container. And within my three days at the Fringe I had danced on stage to a soundtrack of Happy Mondays, joined a toxic ‘girl squad’ in an experiential commentary on social media and was serenaded by a hotpant-wearing, accordion-playing boy wonder from…

“IT’S FISHING,” SAYS DAVE Downie, pushing back his weathered Akubra. “Sometimes you catch one, sometimes you don’t.” Dave should know. As a fishing journalist for more than 40 years, he’s fished all over Australia and is acutely aware that the sport is as much about serendipity as it is about skill. Which is just as well because as a complete novice, my early casting attempts are laughably inept. THE TARMAC ROAD CROSSES its arms and refuses to budge another inch outside the town of Wentworth, where the fabled Murray locks arms in a river dance with the less-travelled Darling. This is the starting point for a seven-day road trip north-east along the lifeforce of the New South Wales outback, the Darling River Run. Not your same-place-every-year-and-back road trip, that’s for sure. Northwards, the border town’s orchards should soon submit to the Wide Brown Land – in theory – but immediately it’s clear that while the land is always wide, it’s certainly never just brown.
