SANDISK LAUNCHES MODULAR PRO-BLADE STORAGE ECOSYSTEM SANDISK has unveiled a new modular storage ‘Ecosystem’, the PRO-BLADE Modular SSD. The ecosystem consists of three parts - the PRO-BLADE SSD mag, the PRO-BLADE Portable SSD enclosure, and the PRO-BLADE Desktop SSD enclosure. The PRO-BLADE SSD mag is an NVMe SSD that comes in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB sizes. It offers three meter drop protection and 4,000 lbs crush resistance. The PRO-BLADE Transport Portable USB-C SSD enclosure holds one PRO-BLADE mag, and offers additional protection as well as read/write speeds of up to 2000MB/s over USB-C. According to SanDisk, the ecosystem was designed so that users can swap out PRO-BLADE SSD mags depending on how much storage they need, and the enclosure also features an aluminium heatsink to help keep the drive cool…

THIS MONTH’S WINNER RIA MURRAY Painting with Light EDITOR’S COMMENT Ria Murray tells us this creative image was made during a light painting camera club outing last year. “The person moving the lights is standing in the middle of the image,” she says. “I love the effect whereby the light trails have made this image into an abstract artwork.” This image is so unlike anything we normally associate with photography, and in fact at first we thought you’d captured underwater krill at night! My first professional level Apple computer was a Power Mac G4 that I purchased new in 1999 for $6000. It had a 300-megahertz processor, 64-megabytes of RAM, 10-Gigabytes of storage and it weighed 13-kilograms. Eight years later Apple released its first iPhone; it had a 620 MHz processor, 128MBs of RAM, 16GBs of storage and it weighed just 135 grams! It was a salient reminder of how fast, expensive computers can become slow, expensive computers. For this reason, a lot of photographers over the past decade or so have chosen to use iMac computers; they have better performance than the diminutive Mac Mini (introduced in 2005), while costing a third of the price of Apple’s “Pro” desktops. I have been taking photographs most of my life. I began with a 120-film camera as a teenager and then gradually advanced to a SLR and then a DSLR. And yet with family, sport and work commitments filling my everyday life, my camera only seemed to come out of the cupboard at holiday time. On retiring, I joined Adelaide Camera Club and my passion for photography was rekindled. Jack was taking his first surf lesson when, like all good photographers, he saw the potential for a photograph - “I got up running, full wetsuit on, mid lesson, up the shore to my bag and camera and ran back down to catch these surfers just passing me and heading into the misty afternoon sun. It became a set of three photos I’ve never been able to pick from and to be honest, haven’t moved very far from my hard drive but are probably my most reflected upon images”. Ever since I was born, my family and I would pack up our belongings, hitch the caravan, and drive what was then an hour and twenty-minutes from our home in Western Sydney to North Narrabeen on the North Sydney coast. It was there I learned to swim, surf, fish and ride a bike, met my greatest friend, and spent every Christmas. North Narrabeen helped spark my creativity and shape me as a person. When I was 10, my grandfather Ray, whom my family and I adored, passed away suddenly while fishing at the lagoon. In the following years I would climb the side of the headland to look out over the ocean and the North Narrabeen Rockpool, focusing on the smallest details to help reflect and clear my mind. 22…

Offering a diverse range of subject matter in an ever-changing landscape, Australia’s alpine regions are popular destinations for many landscape photographers. However, due to their remote location, these areas are not ones that many people will ever visit regularly. This makes it difficult for photographers to get a good understanding of the environment and how best to shoot it. In 2017 my wife and I decided to leave Melbourne and move up to the Victorian High Country, seeking a quieter lifestyle to raise our children. There are a tonne of photographers out there who are now eagerly eyeing up the monitor market. Why? Well, the mighty Apple Mac Studio has recently launched and it doesn’t ship with a decent monitor (sigh). But also, there are many laptops powerful enough to be a photographer’s ‘main’ computer today – though most will find their tiny laptop screens are not conducive to spending long days in front of the computer. But there are other reasons for wanting a new monitor. You may just need another monitor for more screen real estate; or perhaps you want a colour calibrated screen that you may use exclusively for soft proofing & printing. At the time of writing, I’m participating in a free workshop spread over six two and a half hour long sessions. It’s a program designed to assist folk who are sixty-five or older to do something with their boxes of slides of past travels, their prints falling out of family albums, or even their smartphone snaps. Small groups of participants are learning how to creatively review their photo collections, how to scan slides and prints, and how to manage and process digital files. With the assistance of experienced tutors, participants are curating selections of images from their own archives and will use them to tell stories through printed 50-page photobooks.
