THIS MONTH'S WINNER JOY KACHINA The Rockpool EDITOR’S COMMENT: Joy Kachina’s dramatic shot ‘the rockpool’ was captured on her recent Tasmanian trip. “We camped by the ocean at the Bay of Fires,” she explains. “We found this amazing spot with these boulders in a rockpool that reminded me of a nest. I went early the next morning to capture the sunrise but found instead a dramatic dark sky. ON THE NET DOWNLOAD FREE FROM www.australianphotography.com Often in cityscape photography the sky may look it’s best during golden hour, but at that time very few building lights are on and there is often too much ambient light to capture light trails. By changing the blend mode to lighten, we can easily add light trails and building lights to images captured during the golden hour. If you’re not familiar with what blend modes are, they change the way a layer interacts with those below it. When a layer’s blend mode is changed to lighten, Photoshop will only reveal the pixels which are lighter than the layers below it, whilst hiding everything that is darker. Photo Essays have long been a popular technique used in storytelling. Some people use just the image, and some use an image supported by strong and emotive captions to tell a story. Regardless, a good photo essay should get the viewer thinking, create mood and, if possible, act as a call to action. Until recently I have enjoyed photo essays but had never really given them much thought as a practice I would undertake. That changed in August when I was approached to have an image included in one that had an underlying theme of climate change. I have heard of landscape photographers targeting a location for weeks, only to walk away with some ok images, while I've turned up at a location and had a great shot in the bag in minutes. Today, the challenge of time and light is just the same as it ever was with landscape photography, but our equipment is what can be pushed further than ever. THIS MONTH'S WINNER FAR, FAR AWAY While Raymond Richards was on tour in Myanmar, he visited the Mahagandayon Monastery. He wrote: “It houses several thousand buddhist monks and trainees. At midday, they all form an orderly queue for their single meal for the day. The faraway look in this monk’s face caught my attention as he was either dreaming of food or meditating.” Another possibility for the faraway look is that he may have been aware of being photographed and didn’t want to engage in the process. After being involved in a great discussion with some photographers about the challenges in creating art and something original at a location that has been photographed countless times, I recently decided to drive the three hours south of my hometown of Perth to revisit Sugarloaf rock, one of the icons of landscape photography on this side of the country. Sugarloaf really is a stunning location and is a place that anyone who passes through should really take the time to stop at. CANON ANNOUNCES ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY FOCUSED EOS RA CANON has announced the latest iteration of the EOS R lineup of mirrorless full-frame cameras: the Canon EOS Ra. Rather than a complete redesign of the EOS R, this ‘special’ version comes with a number of features aimed at improving astrophotography performance. The major change is the IR blocking filter in the original EOS R has been modified to allow for infrared radiation, known as hydrogen alpha rays (Ha, 656.28nm), to be captured. On the standard EOS R, the IR filter is optimised to block these rays (which are invsiible), however in astrophotography, capturing them is necessary to gather accurate colour information of distant galaxies. The modification means the EOS Ra is about four times as sensitive to hydrogen alpha rays in comparison to…

There’s a magical world after dark few of us get to see, let alone photograph. Familiar beasts reveal a different side to their nature, predators go on the prowl and a host of strange and less familiar nocturnal creatures emerge from their daytime hiding places. Without the distraction of background clutter, with shapes seemingly enhanced and features magnified in the velvet blackness of the ‘night-studio’, it’s possible to ramp up the intensity of your wildlife shots and make memorable captures. My interest in photography started in my teens with a rangefinder camera that I won in a drawing competition. My other inter-est was bushwalking and climbing and I soon discovered that photography was a great way to show these activities to oth-ers. Initially this was with slide shows and prints but this has changed to be mainly illustrating magazine articles and books. I have written numerous books for other publishers but now all are self-published. Currently I have 14 books in print with more being worked on.
