For me, adventure is full of unexpected and big ideas, and this time it was no different. I'd booked a one way ticket to join a project roadtripping from Russia to Iran, including stops in Georgia and Armenia. With me, a group of professional slackliners and basejumpers from Russia, Germany, Estonia and Australia: an unlikely mix crossing insecure and dangerous borders. Our choice of vehicle was a rundown 20-year-old Toyota Hiace which we used to look for the most engrossing, challenging and extreme slacklines this amazing part of the world had to offer. KERRY BOYTELL Bat out of hell EDITOR’S COMMENTS Kerry Boytell captured this shot of bats in Costa Rica at night with an infrared trigger. “The bats cut the beam and caused the flash to fire, but I had to depress the shutter every 1-2 seconds and hope it coincided with the flash,” she says. “The flower was pre-focussed before dark. Many shots were taken over the next hour but only one or two where just one bat was in the frame. Over 6,500 photographic submissions were entered from photographers in 67 countries—all capturing captivating moments of life on Earth. This year’s Grand Prize image, titled “Black Grouse Showing Off” by photographer Audun Rikardsen of Tromsø, Norway, provides a glimpse at the showy display of a black grouse looking to impress female birds from atop his coastal lookout. Rikardsen spent three years preparing for the shot, and while his original goal was to photograph majestic golden eagles, it was a happy coincidence that this charismatic grouse frequently returned and became comfortable in front of the camera. Rikardsen, who grew up in a small Norwegian fishing community, draws inspiration from his lifelong fascination with the Arctic’s rugged landscape and wildlife. I'm a 46-year-old IT professional who is passionate about photography. I enjoy photographing military aviation, macro, wildlife and landscapes. I am the current Chairperson of the Australian Photographic Society Digital Group and Exhibition Services and have been Vice President of the South Australian Photographic Federation and President of the Edwardstown Photography Club. My interest in photography grew out of a life long interest in military aviation and was sparked in to action after attending the Avalon airshow many years ago with a basic point-and-shoot camera. OLIVE COTTON PORTRAITURE AWARD FINALISTS ANNOUNCED THE 79 finalists selected in this year’s prestigious Olive Cotton Award for photographic portraiture have been announced. A total of 432 entries were received for the 2019 Award. Among the personal and politicised subjects are a number of well-known faces including Australian domestic violence campaigner and 2015 Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty AO, philanthropist Tim Fairfax AC, and Australia’s oldest dancer, 104-year-old Eileen Kramer. 2019 Guest Judge, Australian photo-media artist Marian Drew, said she shortlisted finalists that explore the issue of identity via the complex relationship of sitter, photographer and viewer. “As a judge, I’m looking for something genuine, reflective, curious and fragile—ideas and images that lie at the edge, generating diversity and subtlety”. Panasonic's announcement last year that it planned to release two full-frame mirrorless cameras caught us a little off guard. After all, the company had been pushing its Micro Four Thirds system cameras, Lumix G, for over a decade and with great success, especially so for videographers with the hugely popular GH series. Let’s explore a journey of thinking before pressing the shutter, of asking in advance, “What is this about?” The owner welcomed a unique image of her beloved pets. I challenged myself to display a different perspective on food. A quick glance may suggest that all items on this plate are food, enhanced by the glass and cutlery to the right.
