1 RESEARCH EVERYTHING The vast majority of my images have not come about from luck alone. The locations have been thoroughly researched online using Google Maps and Google Earth, which provides a satellite image of the subject and its surroundings. Google Maps is not only a great tool to locate unique subjects but can be used to scout suitable locations to launch from outside of the No-Fly-Zones. Too often I’ve come up with an idea for an aerial image only to check the DJI app and find it’s a no-go. PhotoPills is great for checking sunrise and sunset times and the exact location in which this will happen. With this knowledge, you can plan to fly within the first 15-20 minutes after sunrise and 30 minutes before sunset to maximise…

THE MOMENT According to 13 year-old Finn Reilly, he was waiting for half an hour in the perfect position behind a rock, waiting for the flock of swallows to start their evening bathing. “Suddenly they all came swooping down at once. They slowed down just long enough for the camera to focus and for me to press the button.” This sort of shot is incredibly difficult to get as these birds move at a cracking pace as they skim and drink or bathe. That means you must have good reflexes to get this subject in this pose and as sharp as you have, and with all those droplets of water thrown up. Over the last two years I’ve been working on a photo-documentary about Australia’s vulnerable grey-headed flying foxes. I wanted to create a series of images that helped raise awareness about their importance to our forests (as pollinators and seed dispersers), of the challenges that they face, of what we can do to help them, and also highlight the incredible work of their rescuers and carers. Whilst the photo series was always going to consist of 10-20 images presented together as a story, I also wanted to capture a few stand-alone images that might be impactful in their own right. MINIMALISM THIS MONTH’S WINNER MOHIT BHATIA Fork in my kitchen EDITOR’S COMMENTS Objects (and people) in threes always seem to look good in an image, and whether it was deliberate or not, Mohit Bhatia’s image of these forks balancing each other in three distinct lines is a great example of how numbers and the power of repetition can be so effective at drawing the eye. South African photographer Jacques Van As may call Australia home now, but the 34-year-old's journey here was not a traditional one. Based in Brisbane for the last couple of years, Van As first lived in Sydney, via London and Johannesburg, his home town. He tells Australian Photography that his professional photography journey only really took off after moving to the Sunshine State, where he now specialises in landscapes, travel photography, portraiture and commercial video and photography work.
