Kym Illman said she was at Lancelin Beach in WA when she noticed that Sadie the dog would go crazy every time sand was thrown. “I headed home to grab my camera and shooting with the light, I had owner Georgie throw handfuls of sand in the air,” she says. Using a wide 11-24mm lens has allowed Kym to capture more of that beautiful sky, and a fast shutter speed of 1/8000th coupled with a high ISO have helped keep everything sharp. Once upon a time, college life seemed pretty free and easy. Sure, there was work to be done, but there always seemed time for plenty of extra-curricular activities on the side. My (admittedly fading) memories of my early years of part-time study included socialising, the odd on-campus concert, and lots of catching up with current events via the student newspaper. Pentax fans have patiently waited for the company to join the ranks of Canon, Nikon and Sony in offering a high resolution 36-megapixel plus sized sensor camera, and it felt like every last one was at the packed unveiling of the K-1 at a glitzy event one crisp winter evening on Sydney’s waterfront recently. My attempts to shoulder my way in for a proper look failed miserably, but with a quick phone call I soon had my very own K-1 in for a closer review. Living on the West Coast of Australia I have always felt very spoiled when it comes to stunning beaches lined with white sand and water so blue I have heard people describe it as looking ‘manufactured’. Our coastal scenes are stunning and as you head further north the rich red colours of the outback take over, with amazing places like Karijini National Park showcasing some of the most spectacular gorges in the country. However, one thing I don’t get to see much of is lush, green, moss-covered forests with stunning waterfalls scattered throughout them. So when I do visit these kinds of places I always feel as if I’m entering a fairy tale. Recently I spent eight days camping in Tasmania visiting some absolutely stunning locations. As an amateur photographer with an interest in motorsport, I’ve attended several events at race tracks such as Bathurst, Eastern Creek, Phillip Island and others. Most of the shots I’ve taken at these circuits were from typical vantage points on corners or fence lines and mostly feature competitor vehicles whizzing past in race mode. Over the years my camera kit grew to include longer zoom lenses, mostly for shooting motorsport. Going by some of the pro motorsport photographers I saw at race tracks, if you didn’t at least have a 400mm lens you weren’t taking it seriously! Rhino were once found throughout Africa, but their numbers have dramatically decreased due to human activities. The smaller Black Rhino is now critically endangered with approximately 5000 individuals remaining in the wild. Habitat, poaching and political conflict are all contributing factors. Poaching is perceived as the biggest threat, but only because it has been in the forefront of the media recently. With social media use so widespread, it is presumed poachers must be using channels like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to locate and poach rhino. When speaking to private landholders who host rhino in South Africa, many believe the opposite. They are adamant the vast majority of poaching incidents stem from inside information and local knowledge. Talk to any experienced landscape photographer and most will tell you the same thing: it’s all about the light. In it’s most stripped back form, photography is just light. With it we have photography, without it we don’t. At a more nuanced level, the way a scene is lit can completely change the way we see and respond to it. Unlike studio photographers who can control light to the nth degree, landscape photographers can’t just move the sun and clouds around to get the lighting the way we want it. But we do have choices: To shoot into the light, or away from it; to change our position relative to the scene; or to wait a few hours, days or months for the perfect lighting and weather conditions.
