David Miller is a man on a mission. The director of the Duncan Miller gallery in Little Rock, Arkansas, Miller would be just another enthusiastic photography collector if he didn’t happen to own two million Fairfax photos, a unique record of Australian cultural history that spans over 100 years. Included in his collection are hundreds of signed and stamped photos by legendary photographers like Max Dupain, Olive Cotton, David Moore, Wolfgang Sievers, and Jeff Carter. BEST IPHONE PHOTOS OF THE YEAR AWARDED ASTRIKING image of two Iraqi children roaming the streets of Qayyarah, near Mosul, has won the Grand Prize in this year’s iPhone Photography Awards. Shot with an iPhone 6s, Children of Qayyarah by Sebastiano Tomada was taken in November 2016 as Iraqi forces launched their offensive to retake Mosul from ISIS. In the image, towers of billowing smoke from oil wells set ablaze by retreating ISIS fighters can be seen in the background. Ever wondered how the pros capture those decisive moments on the streets without drawing attention to themselves? Want to be more inconspicuous? Wish you were invisible? Unfortunately there is no magic trick for becoming completely invisible on the streets, but there is a popular technique many street photographers employ which can definitely make you more undetectable. Recently I have seen two photographic projects that have reminded me about the importance of conservation of our native animals, birds and landscapes and the value in reconnecting with nature. The work is not traditional photography, but rather the product of artists who convert their photos into works of art. The two photographers are Judi Lapsley Miller, from New Zealand and Steve Parish, originally from the UK and now from Australia. When I arrived the sun was still in the horizon but all of the sudden the clouds came and overtook the sky. The clouds kept moving very fast and I realised that along with the clouds, lightning strikes started appearing as well. I like how the dark clouds above and the dark ocean water are framing the city. Not long after I’d met photographer Shane Chalker for the first time some years ago, we were bobbing around in a fishing boat a few miles offshore from Coffs Harbour. As we drifted near foaming whitewash at the northern end of one of the region’s islands, Chalker jumped overboard - someone had hooked a nice fish. As the fish was played out Chalker snorkelled around below with a Canon DSLR in a housing sporting a big glass dome on the front. The evocative underwater images he shot of that tailor later went on to grace the pages of sportfishing magazine Fishing World. Photography is not so much a carefully planned and executed art for me as it is an unpredictable and improvised series of lucky moments caught on camera. For this shot, I was shooting with my drone with the idea of capturing boats at sunset. I flew around waiting for something to catch my eye, when I spotted this cruise ship leaving Sydney harbour. Flying the drone above the boat while choosing an angle and framing the shot took some time, as did adjusting my settings to capture the image with the best lighting. Once I was satisfied with the height, framing, and lighting, I took several shots. Ithink it is fair to say I will never be hired by National Geographic as a wildlife photographer. Aside from the fact that I am reluctant to call a 600mm f4 telephoto my everyday “walkabout” lens, there is also the knowledge that I would not survive a day, let alone weeks at a time living vicariously through such a lens while waiting for rare animals and birds to deliver the perfect Kodak moment. Other photographers might relish the opportunity to explore the natural world with a telephoto lens, but given the chance, I prefer to explore human habitats with a wide-angle. Like so many of my age my photographic journey started in 1956 with the gift of a Kodak Brownie Box camera. I am totally a product of the camera club movement, having been a member of various Victorian clubs. I joined APS as a young thing and the great Grace Lock took an interest in my progress. In 1980 I moved to New Zealand, subsequently marrying my husband Ron, and between 1986 and 2003 we lived and worked in Papua New Guinea where I taught five different levels of photography at the International High School.
