Dick Johnson famously once said that the only thing you get from looking back is a sore neck. Not all retired drivers subscribe to Dick’s philosophy on the past, though. Indeed, some do see worth in the little things, the flotsam and jetsam items of memorabilia from their time in the sport – the newspaper clippings, the contracts, invoices, letters and even (in the pre-internet age), the telexes. Documents which, of their own, might seem of limited value, but which in fact tell a story of their own.
