BENDA’S WORLDBEATER ONE OF THE MOST ambitious motorcycles ever to be developed in China is set to launch on 1 July, with the ultimate goal the international market. These new spy pictures show Benda’s production version hasn’t been watered down from the LF-01 concept cruiser we revealed last year. The Benda LFC 700 is built around a newly-developed 680cc four-cylinder engine. While it shares some of its internal dimensions with Honda’s CB650 engine and has a Ducati Diavel-like stance, the LFC 700 features unique styling. WE’VE ALREADY GIVEN you the world scoop on CFMoto’s 800MT adventure bike (AMCN Vol 70 No 21). Now it’s been confirmed to go on sale in Australia by the end of the year with a three-year, unlimited kilometre warranty. Local pricing hasn’t been announced for the two models available – the 800MT Sport and the higher-spec 800MT Touring – but expect them to undercut established players in this market segment. AFTER ASSESSING THE V4SS Superbike with a view to resuming production, Norton’s new owner has listed 35 defects of which 20 are considered “safety critical” and recommended owners stop riding the Superbike until remedial action is taken. Crusading UK journalist John Hogan has followed the Norton saga closely and has released a letter sent by Norton’s new owners, Indian manufacturing giant TVS, to the more than 50 buyers of Norton’s Superbike. The list of defects listed in Hogan’s leaked letter are shocking. They include issues with leaking fuel tanks and debris in the engine oil and other internal mechanical issues that could cause seizures. Road Mode provides a mid-level of throttle response and engine power, a mid-level of Cornering-ABS and Cornering Traction Control intervention and a relatively plush suspension setting, and it’s ideally suited to touring and riding on bumpy secondary roads. After Wakefield Park, you had a pretty firm idea of the way the Yamaha YZF-R1 needed to be developed to get up to speed, but it involved major work on the ECU. THE WORLDSBK MEDIA were perplexed at why the top speed of riders in FP1 was well over 20km/h quicker at Estoril than last year, until it was revealed organisers had moved the speed trap to a more sensible place. Many tracks have their speed traps set for F1 or similarly fast cars, which brake way, way later than any bike can. So, bikes are often already braking from their top speed before they hit the speed-trap beams. The more relevant thing now is that even at a track with almost a 1km main straight such as Estoril, and a fast third-gear entry to it, the work put in on most bikes’ engines and aero designs has seen several manufacturers crack the 323km/h barrier. More than 11,000 Speed Twins have been sold to date, which proves the success of Triumph developing a model that encapsulates the performance and styling trends developed over two decades of customers customising the Hinckley Bonneville. THIS HOT-LOOKING middleweight sportsbike uses Benelli’s 500cc Leoncino engine and chassis to create an alternative to Honda’s CBR500R. Benelli has been quiet on the new-models front for the last year or so, but its parent company has been pumping out related bikes under its Chinese market QJMotor brand. This lone leaked image of its latest effort has circulated on Chinese social media. QJMotor has recently type-approved a naked roadster based on the Leoncino that features an enlarged 549cc version of the engine, increasing power from 35kW to 37.5kW. Other QJMotor models begging to be given the Benelli treatment include a four-cylinder 600cc sportsbike based on the TNT600 engine and chassis and a 750cc twin-cylinder adventure bike derived from the Leoncino 800.…

Background Some may consider Yamaha a touch brazen in unveiling a fully faired parallel twin with an R7 sticker slapped on it. The original YZF-R7 was a rare and exotic four-cylinder WSBK racer, whereas the new YZF-R7 shares much with its naked MT-07 stablemate, including its frame and engine. You lovely brute, you YAMAHA TOOK THE opportunity to relaunch the entire MT range while it rolled out its all-new MT-09 and MT-09 SP. On both the road ride and the ‘track’ component – and when I say track, think Targa-style road section with trees and very little runoff – we had the opportunity to sample the entire MT range, from the little MT-03 through to the brutal MT-10. AS PART OF revising its entire range to meet Euro-5 compliance MV Agusta has also extended its ‘Rosso’ range to include the F3. This means the F3 joins the Brutale 800, Dragster 800 and Turismo Veloce in MV's lowest-priced model range. Unlike the Brutale and Dragster Rosso models, which have had power slashed from 103kW for the more expensive versions to 81kW on the red-only Rosso machines, the F3 isn’t being castrated. Its engine, updated to Euro-5 emissions spec with low-friction coatings, higher-pressure injectors and revised ECU firmware, makes 108kW at 13,000rpm, on a par with the previous F3. ZONTES IS STEPPING up from a model range no bigger than 312cc to develop a big-bore, high-performance three-cylinder. Expected to be between 800cc and 1000cc, this DOHC engine has been revealed on the company’s Chinese social media. It is said to have a high compression ratio of 13.5:1 – even higher than the 13.3:1 that MV Agusta uses on its F3 800. So expect a firebrand, not a softer, Yamaha MT-09-style character. In 1925, the French press described the successful American motorcycle racer Paul Anderson as “a hardened rider with a steel look in his eyes.” Anderson raced for several manufacturers during his career, but he was most successful with Excelsior and Indian. In 1920, his career as a factory rider began with Excelsior, whose factory team consisted of Warren Cropp, Hugh Murray, J.A. McNeil and Joe Wolters. In 1922, after the disbandment of Harley’s Wrecking Crew, Maldwyn Jones was also signed by Excelsior and he was paired up with Anderson to tour from circuit to circuit. IT ONLY REQUIRES a few minutes in the spectacular surroundings of the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello to be won over by its charm. For one, the setting is sublime, the paddock located in a valley of the spectacular Tuscan hills. In times outside the pandemic its atmosphere is as loud as it is incessant, all airhorns, revving engines and yellow smoke. And the track certainly doesn’t disappoint. AFTER A TRICKY start to 2021, KTM is back as Miguel Olvieira scored a brilliant second in Mugello and an expert win in Barcelona. SEVEN YEARS AFTER the last competitive outing for the legendary Belgian-based race team Alstare is back in the WorldSBK paddock as part of the GIL Yamaha squad. In the early days of WorldSBK Francis and Patricia Batta’s Alstare team were partners with the main series organisers, the Flammini group. Running both full-on racing efforts and logistical and supply elements to its business, Alstare even now supplies hospitality hardware and other logistics to many in WorldSBK, including Dorna. SINCE COVID STRUCK back in 2020, historic racing has been nonexistent in Victoria with the last event being the 2020 International Island Classic. But that all changed when the 2021 Historic Winton roared into life, even if Covid restrictions limited entries to just 100 riders. Historic Winton is a two-plus-four event, with the car racing conducted by the Austin Seven Club and bikes hosted by the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria. The classes ranged from Vintage right through to Period 5 along with sidecars and engine capacities varying from a 1965 125cc BSA Bantam ridden by Stuart Gorrie right through to a 1982 1200cc Harris-framed Suzuki ridden by Roger Gunn. JARRED BROOK HAD to produce something special to become the only dual champion at the recent 2021 Australian Senior Track Championships at Quirindi Showground, in NSW. Unbeaten in his three heats of both the MX Open and Pro 450 classes he had to fight his way forward from midfield to win both finals. In the MX Open final Jordan Dall, Thomas Herrick and Daniel Wicks followed Brook home, while Dall was also runner-up in the Pro 450 ahead of Grant Charnock and Boyd Hollis. Long track sliders had their largest and most competitive line-up for several years with honours shared between an experienced campaigner and several teenagers who improved as the weekend wore on.
