The smallest Production motorcycle on the Salt this year was piloted by the second-youngest competitor. When 17-year-old Bronwyn Kealy launched her CBR125R, she was quickly on the pace, despite wheelspinning in third. The Eltham, Vic, Year-12 student ran 84.155mph (136.64km/h) on the wind-assisted first day, and 74.94mph (120.54km/h) on day two, despite getting hung up in a rut. Apart from the required safety additions, the only change to the CBR125R was an extra tooth on the front sprocket. Engineering Excess The professional-looking 40-valve DOHC PGM V8 is a doubled-up 2006 Yamaha YZF-R1 engine – the latest version available when Paul began the project – and retains the same 77 x 54mm dimensions for a capacity of 1996cc. The two banks of cylinders sit at 90º to each other for perfect primary balance, and the forward-running five-bearing flat-plane crank is fitted with custom I-beam conrods and R1 pistons delivering a 13:1 compression ratio via the pair of unmodified YZF-R1 cylinder heads, with a trio of 23.5mm inlet valves and two 25mm exhausts in each cylinder operated by standard camshafts. In this form, the engine delivers 334bhp at 12,800rpm as measured at the countershaft sprocket, with maximum torque of 214Nm produced at 9500rpm. “But everything is completely standard,” he says.…

Hard to believe, but Ducati’s popular Multistrada is now into its seventh generation in 12 years. When the Pierre Terblanche-designed Multistrada 1000DS was released in 2003 it pushed the envelope of design, refusing to be pigeon-holed as any one type of motorcycle. Fast forward 12 years and there has been a raft of technical advancements added to the now 1198cc Multistrada 1200, all lovingly accepted by loyal owners. Risky MX Motocross accidents are a constant threat, but the value of such training for a MotoGP rider outweighs the risk, according to Valentino Rossi, whose 2010 season was spoiled by a shoulder injury sustained in the same way. The value, he explained, was in practising throttle control, on a bike where wheelspin and loss of traction goes without saying. DUCATI’S UPDATED 1198CC Testastretta V-twin is the world’s first motorcycle engine with variable timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts. The Desmodromic Variable Timing (DVT) fitted to the 1198cc Testastretta V-twin in Ducati’s 2015 Multistrada marks the first time variable valve timing has been applied to both the inlet and exhaust camshafts of a production motorcycle engine. Variable timing has been used in the car industry for many years, but last appeared on a motorcycle engine in 2007 when Kawasaki fitted it to the intake camshaft of its GTR1400. Ducati’s system varies the timing of the inlet and exhaust valves, allowing a wider range of flexibility with cam timing, engine tuning and fuelling. THE EPHEMERAL FEEL-good factor was back at one of WSB racing’s most gloriously atmospheric venues, Imola, last weekend. THE CHANCES OF Suzuki's turbocharged Recursion concept reaching production seem to loom larger every issue as Suzuki files more patents which suggest the 2013 show bike is far more than a pipe dream. We’ve already seen how the Recursion’s intercooler is arranged (AMCN Vol 64 No 20), and how it’d need additional front air intakes and alterations to the headlights. New paperwork from Suzuki shows new details of the engine itself. The parallel twin, single-cam, 588cc engine is a long-stroke, low-revving design developed with superbike-crushing torque in mind. Suzuki claim 74kW of power at 8000rpm and 100Nm of torque at just 4500rpm. By pursuing torque rather than power, Suzuki should have useable performance and impressive economy, while avoiding some of the heat problems associated with powerful, higher-revving engines. The Suzuki GSX-R750 Shane Gaghan and the Rock Racing Australia Team have used to claim a fistful of speed records is no normal Gixxer. The turbocharged beast runs on VP C16 leaded oxygenated gas. However, and as Rock Racing discovered, going fast on the salt isn’t simply a matter of bulk horsepower. Getting all that power to the ground can be a tricky science. Even at 198mph (320km/h) the back wheel of the Suzuki was still spinning wildly – adding extra weight failed to completely cure the issue. HERO MOTOCORP, 49.2 percent owner of the failed EBR and said to be the largest motorcycle and scooter manufacturer in the world by unit volume, has announced a 6.2 percent growth in global sales for the 2014/15 financial year, selling an incredible 6,631,826 units (6,245,960 in 2013/14) However, Hero’s record performance has raised further questions about its decision to allow EBR to file for bankruptcy last month despite paying US$24million for a stake in in July, 2013. Letter of the issue Follow our lead I understand Melbourne’s fairly forward-looking City Council, recently unanimously agreed to a Motorcycle Plan to boost the use of motorcycles and scooters, with a view to cutting congestion. The Lord Mayor has said he wants to encourage peak-hour commuting on more efficient vehicles, especially “powered two-wheelers”. Hallelujah! Melbourne’s Councillors agreed to continue talking to rider representatives, to turn 20 car-parking spaces over to free parking for bikes (that should make space for about 80 bikes), to ear-mark a quarter of a million bucks to support safe motorbike parking, to review footpath parking on narrow walk ways and to continue looking into free off-street parking. PAUL MALONEY Expat Engineer PAUL MALONEY IS one of the phalanx of race engineers emanating from Australia/NZ who have provided a technical backbone to race teams for the past 30 years. Hailing from Castlemaine, Victoria, Paul worked as a civil engineer before swapping to teaching maths and science. In the mid-’80s he donned a backpack and headed for to Europe and his 12-month stay lasted 20 years. In 1988 Paul achieved his ambition of becoming a race engineer for the Loctite Yamaha Superbike team which led to a job in Sweden for Yamaha tuners who supplied Anders Andersson’s OW 01 engines.
