Driving Force BMW employs a similar system on both of its K1200 & K1300 engines THIS COULD BE the engine to power Honda’s next generation of sportsbikes. It certainly fits some of the rumours which have been circulating about the direction Honda is planning to take with its replacement for the current CBR1000RR. Our sources within Honda suggest the company is opting to steer a different course to rivals who are constantly making their sportsbikes more powerful, with more and more equipment. Honda will instead focus on a more user-friendly design, which will be smaller and lighter. Kawasaki ZX-R400 Released in 1989, Kawasaki’s ZX-R400 helped kick start the in-line four cylinder 400cc superbike craze which swept the globe. The H1 (1989) and H2 (1990) were the first two models released by Kawasaki, but it’s the L generation, released in six models from 1991 until the ZX-R400 was discontinued in 2003, which are the most popular. The L1 featured a new and improved chassis, extra engine power, a slimmer profile as well as updated styling and fairing. What’s it got The L1 has a 398cc, 16-valve, in-line four-cylinder engine with a six-speed gearbox and a 14,500rpm redline. Fuelling is handled by four 32mm Mikuni carburettors. There’s no better place on earth to test the limits of a ballistic motorcycle than the flat-out flowing thread of tar around Phillip Island – so you can imagine my excitement when BMW’s heavily revised S1000RR was burbling along pitlane for it’s much-anticipated Australian launch. The new Moto Guzzi V7 II Stone leans heavily on history: in the last five years there have been about 15 variations on the basic 750cc bike, mostly with either varyingly attractive paint schemes or sportier cafe racer versions. In the late 1960’s the earliest Guzzi V-twins were 700cc V7s – and several models have adopted Roman II, III IV and even V numerals for subsequent versions, but this model shares almost no DNA with them: it is based on the decade younger small-block engine design. Valentino Rossi has stretched his lead in the world championship standings following a dramatic race in Argentina – in which Marc Marquez crashed out. Opting to go for an extra hard rear tyre, as opposed to the hard chosen at the last minute by Marquez, the 36-year-old Italian reeled in a four-second deficit to Marquez and overtook the Spaniard with just two laps to go. Rossi (Movistar Yamaha) started from eighth on the grid and couldn’t better his position by the end of lap one, as pole starter Marquez headed the field. Johann Zarco has taken over the championship lead from Alex Rins following his victory in Argentina. Zarco (Ajo Kalex) had set the pace in, but it was third-row starter Xavier Simeon (Federal Oils Kalex) who lead, with defending champ Tito Rabat (Estrella-VDS Kalex) taking over at the second corner. On the next corner, Rabat ran off the track, dropping to last. At the same time, Qatar winner Jonas Folger (AGR Kalex) did the same thing, and the pair charged back together, with Folger breaking the lap record. Simeon led the first lap, chased by Sam Lowes (Speed Up), Zarco, Mika Kallio (Italtrans Kalex), Sandro Cortese (Dynavolt Kalex) and Tom Luthi (Derendinger Kalex). MV AGUSTA SUPERSPORT rider Jules Cluzel has already used up three of his quota of six engines due to mechanical issues, but he has no special plan in hand to deal with a problem not of his making. “I will just try my maximum,” he said after Assen. “For me it is not fair, but I need to be at the top of the championship. IN THE MONSTER MX1 class there was controversy from the minute bikes hit the track. CDR Yamaha riders Daniel Reardon, who was leading the race, and Kade Mosig, who was second, both went down during moto one – forcing Reardon to DNF and Mosig to settle for a disappointing 12th. KTM Motocross Racing’s Luke Styke secured race one honours ahead of local Victorian rider Adam Monea and John Phillips in second and third respectively (NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki). In moto two, it was clear that Reardon was out for redemption. MOTORCYCLING AUSTRALIA has announced the Australian team which will contest the 2015 ISDE in Slovenia in September (see sidebar), and again we look like a force to be reckoned with. Australia has one of the world’s strongest off-road and enduro racing scenes, with competitor numbers on the rise, and also boasts some of the best riders internationally. At the 2014 ISDE held in Argentina, despite being a firm favourite to challenge for the win, our ISDE Senior Trophy team suffered a 50 percent DNF rate in the brutaly dry and dusty conditions, eventually finishing sixth overall. MOTORCYCLING AUSTRALIA (MA) is conducting a survey of recreational and competitive motorcycle sport facilities, as well as other operational club assets around Australia. The wide-ranging survey aims to help identify where MA and the state controlling bodies should focus resources, targeting areas which may struggle to access facilities and places to ride. All clubs are encouraged to help with this national audit by participating in the survey – which can be found on MA’s website: www.ma.org.au MA is also asking competition licence holders to participate in an insurance survey – which aims to find out how many people currently hold, or wish to hold, loss-of-earnings insurance. Is Monza back next year? We are waiting for them to make the official proposal of the works. If we approve them, they will start the works and we are ready to include it again next year. What about South Africa? The problem is that a private company cannot run a project like this. They need support from government or local government. If not, it is very hard to pay the fee and all the costs to run the event. The original government of Welkom wanted it, so it depends on which government inside the area wants it. TRIUMPH’S TIGER SPORT is in line for a round of mechanical updates to keep it from falling foul of future emissions limits. The move will effectively prolong the Tiger Sport’s life for several more years. This prototype, spotted near the Triumph factory in the UK, is clearly testing a new version of the long-lived 1050cc triple engine. The bike is festooned with various data logging equipment to monitor the effectiveness of alterations. Visually, the changes are a new clutch cover with Triumph’s T logo instead of the brand’s name, and a redesigned exhaust system – particularly around the manifold which has its pipes arranged differently. IT’S BEEN ALMOST a decade since Piaggio took the first leap to three wheels with its MP3 scooter. The leaning three-wheeler promised motorcycle-style convenience and manoeuvrability with the added safety of an extra front wheel. While the acceptance of a three-wheeled scooter has been a little slow in Australia, the MP3 has gained enough of a following in Europe to spawn imitators like the Italian-designed Quadro. Last year Yamaha waded into the three-wheeled scooter segment with its Tricity scooter, and in typical Yamaha fashion it’s taken three-wheeled thinking to a new level. In addition to the Tricity, Yamaha has revealed three other concepts based on the Tricity design. YAMAHA EUROPE HAS given a new lease of life to the last remaining air-cooled model in its big bike line-up by revamping the XJR1300 with the help of the Italian branch of Australian custom bike builder Deus Ex Machina. The changes include a much smaller reshaped 14.5-litre plastic fuel tank (previously 21 litres) that’s shorter and lower than the last model’s metal version. Despite Yamaha’s claim that the tank and fuel system will tolerate petrol containing up to 10-percent ethanol, this apparently disqualifies the new model from being sold in Australia. The revised model features a reshaped one-piece taper-section aluminium handlebar that’s higher and more pulled back than before. Following in the footsteps of Benelli’s BN 600R nakedbike, which blazed a path by being the first mid-sized four-cylinder motorcycle made in China, the company has launched the competitively priced BN 302. The twin-cylinder Italian-designed beauty comes in at $5590 (+ORC), which is less than its nearest competitors, the $5699 (+ORC) single-cylinder Honda CB300FA and Kawasaki’s fully-faired $6199 (+ORC) Ninja 300 twin. THINGS ARE HOTTING up in the 300-400cc lightweight market. Honda’s Thai-made CB300F roadster and fully-faired CBR300 singles, along with Kawasaki’s twin-cylinder Ninja 300 sportsbike, are now joined by Yamaha with its YZF-R3 Supersport: a 321cc twin that straddles the gap between these bikes and the segment-topping KTM RC390 and 390 Duke – both made in India by the Austrian firm’s Bajaj partner. Manufacturers are keen to develop this segment as small-bore roadbikes are affordable, accessible and fun to ride. They also have a huge potential global audience of all ages, whether as prestige models in developing markets, or as lower-cost options in developed ones. It’s been a long ride for Sylvain Guintoli, all the way from Montélimar, nougat capital of the world, to a quintessentially English farmhouse, just down the road from Mallory Park. THE DATE IS 23 April, 1972, and we are at the Imola 200, billed as the Daytona of Europe. It’s the first major Formula 750 race held in Europe and brings together teams from MV Agusta, BSA, Triumph, Norton, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Laverda, Moto Guzzi, BMW… and Ducati. The race starts in a fashion all too familiar to the assembled throng. A red and silver four-cylinder MV Agusta carrying the number one plate – ridden by Giacomo Agostini, the reigning 350cc and 500cc World Champion – leads off from the line and into the first corner. FUEL, THE THING that makes all our roadbikes go, is a no-brainer. Go to any petrol station, put in the stuff from the green pump, and head off on more adventures in dynamics. Race fuel, however, is a very different kettle of complex hydrocarbons and additives. The race fuel additives and chemical make-up in the technical pages of the FIM rulebook look like hieroglyphics to the average person. But they are designed to make sure nobody takes a technical advantage via their fuel having a very high octane rating. Race fuel’s octane rating – measured by the Motor Octane Number and/or Research Octane Number methods – is achieved by mixing various chemicals, and they are therefore all heavily controlled for race use. A week ago Danny Kent tore up the book of Moto3 conventions to claim a record dry-weather win by 8.5sec. In Argentina the iconoclastic Leopard Honda rider paid even less heed to the rules. Although pipped for pole at the last minute by Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM), he ran away for a second straight lone win by an even bigger margin: 10.3sec. It is extraordinary to watch, particularly since the rest of the gang remained engaged ñin a massive skirmish. MICHAEL VAN DER Mark (Pata Honda) secured not one but two podiums in only his fourth WSBK meeting at his home round of Assen, in front of an adoring crowd. The first Dutch rider to score a podium in WSBK, van der Mark was not aware of the largest Assen crowd for years cheering him on during the race, but it was a different story afterwards. “After the finish flag it was incredible to see,” he said. “Many more people than the last couple of times here. It was amazing that they cheered so long. ROUND TWO OF the British Superbike championship was held on the blink-and-you’llmiss-it Indy circuit at Brands Hatch on 17-19 April, and the sub-46sec track saw a rise in form for the battalion of Aussies running in the hotly contested BSB series. Leading the Aussie charge was Josh Brookes (Milwaukee Yamaha) with a pair of third places, both times just 0.10sec behind championship leader Shane Byrne (PBM Kawasaki), while James Ellison ( JG Speedfit Kawasaki) was victorious in both races. THE FRENCH-BASED Suzuki Endurance Racing Team (SERT) has won the Le Mans 24 Hours race on 18-19 April for the eighth time, aboard the aging but ever-reliable GSX-R1000. Despite a crash, which eventually cut the team down from three to two riders, SERT went on to win by seven laps from the SRC Kawasaki team, which also suffered an early race crash, with the Kawasaki ZX-10R of Team Bollinger Switzerland rounding out the podium a further five laps behind. The 38th running of the race, which was also the first round of the World Endurance Championship, was held in front of over 70,000 spectators. IN THE MOTUL MX2 Class, round three was all about Serco Yamaha’s Luke Clout – claiming two-from-two race wins to secure his second overall win for the 2015 season. In moto one, JCR Yamaha’s Jay Wilson claimed second place, ahead of fellow Yamaha rider Jed Beaton in third (Serco Yamaha). In moto two, Wilson, Luke Arbon and Wade Hunter all copped in-race penalties – throwing out the race order for the 20-minute moto. ERIK BUELL RACING (EBR), which has gone into receivership with more than US$20 million ($25 million) in outstanding liabilities, may end up in the hands of an Indian company. While it initially looked like the end of the road for the eccentric marque, it is now looking more and more likely that it’s part of a carefully planned strategy for Indian giant Hero MotoCorp, who owns a 49.2-percent stake in EBR, to gain full control of the company. Filing for receivership means EBR’s assets will be sold off to the highest bidder. Purchasing the assets of EBR as a bankrupt company will absolve Hero (or any other company) from warranty or spares issues for products manufactured under EBR. Prototype racebikes need testing, they need set up time and they need careful development. Or at least they did until Ducati Corse, now ably led by ex-Aprilia race boss Gigi Dall’Igna, turned up at the second Sepang test with a pair of new bikes. It took Dall’Igna 12 months to research and understand the problems using the adjustability of last year’s bike and we saw at Sepang (AMCN Vol 64 No 17) that his replacement offering is smaller, more tightly packaged, has a repositioned engine and a restructured V4 engine to move the output shaft in order to change the pitch of the bike under acceleration. Jonathan Rea (KRT) clinched his second double victory of 2015 at the iconic Assen circuit, placing him a massive 50 points ahead of his nearest rival Leon Haslam (Aprilia Racing Red Devils). The race was outstanding, with a mix of breathtaking inside passes in peculiar places on the old section, legendary outside overtakes and harsh contacts at the infamous final chicane. Following his success in Aragon, Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) has gained a 25-point series lead by clinching his second victory of the season in Assen. However the race will be remembered for his heated argument on the slowdown lap with Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) – which was brought about by the two determined riders banging fairings on the last corner. GIGI DALL’IGNA, Ducati Corse’s clever and pragmatic race boss, says race wins and a world title are the focus after reaching the initial target of fixing the bike’s infamous and chronic understeer. With the first three rounds of the championship now behind him, this ambitious target now appears feasible. “The most important thing with GP15 is that the bike turns much better – this was the main target we wanted to reach,” Dall’Igna said. “Our target (now) is to win at least one race this year. HONDA IS EMBARKING on an ambitious expansion of its bike racing empire. World domination awaits, it seems. The factory-backed programs will be directly supervised by the Honda Racing Corporation’s vice-president Shuhei Nakamoto. The plans were revealed to AMCN by Nakamoto – who confirmed an assault on the AMA Supercross Championship that has most recently been dominated by KTM and Kawasaki. Earlier this year Nakamoto attended the San Diego Supercross to kick start what is a three-year plan for the high-profile American series. “Within three years Honda want to win the AMA Supercross championship – it is now a HRC project and it is very interesting,” Nakamoto said. “It is completely different from an engineering side and I’m very excited about this project.” The AMA Supercross project expands HRC’s off-road activity…

Green took the round three overall win in Saturday’s Cross Country event, and backed it up on Sunday with the E1 class win and second place overall to a resurgent Toby Price (Motorex KTM) – who took control of the round-four sprint event after his fourth place the previous day. THE BIGGEST CROWD ever to attend a Speedway Grand Prix deserved better – but all they got was 12 heats before the meeting was abandoned on the grounds of safety. A crowd of 53,000 fans were in Poland’s national football stadium – Stadion Narodowy – for the Warsaw FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Poland, and they saw an abbreviated event that shed no light on the 2015 championship, and left a black mark for the sport. The man-made track was breaking up and rutting – clearly not right when only two riders chose to practice on the Friday, before 14 riders were given a session on the morning of race day. How did you get into racing bikes? A friend of mine and I started riding from Mount Barker to Murray Bridge, SA, for a bit of fun – me on a BSA A7 twin. After a while we decided to soup our bikes up, and I got interested. My first road race was actually the last-ever meeting at Port Wakefield in 1961. I also did scrambles and speedway, but I fell down a bit. I wasn’t a natural rider, so I worked pretty hard to go fast. Back in those days, you rode the same bike no matter what the discipline.
