Most general-type goods/freight is loaded into covered/ box wagons to protect the items from the elements. Some items will not fit through the doors of these wagons, so this freight is placed into open wagons and covered by a tarp. The QR Goods and Rates book lists freight that should not be covered with a tarp. Most of this type of freight does not require protection from the weather. Some standards show some freight types must be loaded into open wagons. In recent times freight that cannot be stacked onto pallets is called ‘cranky’ or ‘ruff’ freight. Prototype This kit is a model of the six-wheeled, rigid wheelbase, ‘supplementary tenders’, 42 of which were built between 1884 and 1886. They were used to extend the range of steam locomotives in areas of poor water supply. Most lasted in service well into the 1950s, with a few lasting until the late 1960s. One, L596, has survived and is preserved as part of the collection of the NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere. Ransomeware Attack Regrettably, on Anzac Day last, AMRM’s computer system suffered a random ransomware attack. The attack not only took out all of our ‘in use’ files, but also the backup that secures our system. Thankfully, off-site backup enabled us to finish the June issue on time and our latest book, NSW Railways in Colour 1855-1957, was not affected either. However, some of our other back up processes were not up to date, though most are recoverable, given time. The biggest problem we have that may affect our readers is that we have had to re-enter much of the recent data pertaining to the AMRM subscription system (luckily most of the info has a paper trail). Fingal is one of three major, and numerous smaller, stations on the Fingal Valley line. This is a branch of some 80km, running east from Conara Junction, which is about 60km south of Launceston on the main line to Hobart. The line dates back to the late 19th century and in its heyday served timber, general mining and agriculture, as well as numerous coal mines. There was also significant passenger traffic between Conara Junction, Avoca, Fingal and St Marys (the terminus), as well as all stops in-between. Sadly, today, the only traffic is a four/five times per week coal train, which runs only as far as Fingal. The line from Fingal to the terminus at St Marys has been disused for some decades. Construction – The Roof The first step of the roof construction is to reduce the roof’s length from a scale 72'6" down to 64'6". Therefore, when we convert these measurements into HO scale equivalents, we will need to reduce the overall length of the roof from 253.7mm to 225.7mm – a reduction of approximately 28mm. I use the word ‘approximately’ due to the slight discrepancies in scale with the commercially available roofs currently on offer. The Modelling the Railways of South Australia convention team is pleased to see Bob Gallagher recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Since our first convention 24 years ago, Bob and AMRM have supported our efforts to hold a convention promoting the modelling of the railways of South Australia, and our desire to produce quality notes and presentations. On the broader Australia-wide front, Bob refocussed AMRM to Australian modelling, and he and the magazine have been the catalyst for manufacturers and retailers to produce kits and ready-to-run items for the Australian prototype market. Following the publication of my article on making your own signs (Advertising for Station Street, AMRM Issue 334, February 2019), I was asked how I identified the correct fonts to use when making a sign. In this article I will attempt to create a guide for identifying typefaces to help modellers know what peculiarities in typeface design to look for when creating a sign. For this exercise I have used some petrol signs that are among my collection. I also used an Internet search engine to locate images of old petrol signs for this exercise. I hadn’t really planned to convert a Eureka 50 to a 55. ”It just wasn’t possible... was it?” I had purchased another of Eureka’s ‘reject’ 50 class locos, with tender, and planned to use it ‘as it came’, a 50 class with a small 3650 gallon tender. It had a slight bind in the coupling rods, but a couple of minutes with a file solved that problem. Then the wife asked me Can you use these?” She handed me a box of Newey nickel silver plated pins. Austrains have released their long-anticipated, r-t-r, HO scale VR four-wheel FJ flour hoppers. There are six separate three-packs available, each containing two plain silver wagons and one vehicle with authentic advertising logos. One of the plain wagons and five of the advertising schemes are illustrated here. Casula Hobbies have released their HO scale, r-t-r, NSWGR MLV/MLK milk tank wagons, E bogie flat wagons and 7000 gallon bogie water tank (not illustrated) wagons.
