Australians love their homes and have very definite ideas about interior decorating. As a nation, we are pretty sophisticated design consumers; over the years I have been working in Australian interior magazines, I have seen a huge increase in the confidence of Australians using colour in their interior schemes. And while I love seeing well-executed and beautifully curated colour work, my heart belongs to white. I love a clean base to display my art collection on and assemble design pieces and soft furnishings. Give me pale polished floorboards or white painted ones, rugs and a Dulux Natural White wall any day, and I am happy to style up an inviting retreat. Each of the white houses in this issue is so different, and there is undoubtedly nothing bland about them.…

“GO FOR CONTRASTS AND MIX PATTERNS. TEAM STRIPES WITH CHECKS AND PLAINS.” Cushions are one of a decorator’s most adaptable tools. They can be a great remedy to boost a sofa, chair or bed’s morale. If a room seems too dark, cushions can lighten it up. If it’s boring, they can add flash and pump up the volume. A mix of different designs is more visually interesting than a uniform set. Contrasting shades and styles add depth. In my (Melissa’s) living room I have a mix of pistachio, sage and brown cushions – colours that are present in the room in art and other textiles, which unifies the space.
