“Observing the world around me, whether through architecture, art or people, helps me apply fresh perspectives to my work.” I grew up in a home where creativity was always encouraged, whether it was through art, music or design. My parents valued craftsmanship, and that instilled in me the importance of not just making things look beautiful but also making them meaningful and purposeful. I think that early influence has been core in the way I approach design now. There isn’t really an ‘average’ day for me. Separated from the main bedroom by a simple curtain, this ensuite goes far beyond practicality. “Our client, an avid blues fan, wanted a feminine home with a sense of mystique and her treasured artefacts were to be incorporated and displayed throughout,” says interior designer Lauren Ryan of design studio Anna.Carin. A contemporary interpretation of traditional Queenslander features, this luxurious ensuite in a Brisbane cottage flows seamlessly from the main bedroom, with timber screening to delineate zones and maintain a sense of privacy. With the aim of creating a sense of harmony and continuity with the existing home, designer Christopher Gyzemyter of CG Design Studio sourced refined finishes with warm tones. “I love the softness and warmth generated by the sheer curtains, use of aged brass and handmade elements,” he says. A redesign of an existing space was needed to create this stunning his-and-hers ensuite. To ensure a seamless connection with the main bedroom, Kate Hickling of Interiors by Kate designed large double doors that open onto the bath and vanities. “I love how it flows from the bedroom – we used the same paint colour on the walls and joinery so it felt like an extension of the bedroom,” says Kate. “There’s privacy where you need it, but the open layout with access to the vanities makes it a free-flowing, usable space.” The DadoQuartz ‘Julia’ bath and Carrara mosaic floor tiles steal the show. VERMICELLI SALAD WITH PEANUT & TAHINI SAUCE Prep time: 15 minutes. This lush, multi-layered garden in Sydney’s east is a peaceful paradise for its lucky owners. With a pool and sauna fringed in colourful foliage, it’s their everyday go-to, either for entertaining, play or simply unwinding. But mozzies no longer share the buzz, thanks to its landscape designer, Luke Baldwin of Formed Gardens. “I was sceptical when Luke told me that was achievable, but, after a summer with lots of rain, I can say he was right,” says owner David, who lives here with wife Nicole and their two children, a son, 13, and daughter, 11. This urban retreat in the heart of Sydney is much-loved by the owners. “It was important to create a haven for our client, who loves taking long baths,” says designer Brooke Aitken. Accessed via a walk-in robe, the design makes a tight, awkward area work practically while exuding a sense of grandeur. Adding to the practicality, a concealed laundry is tucked inside crisp white joinery, opposite an elegant Zuster washstand from Reece. Brooke’s favourite feature? A bathroom that felt like a luxurious cave was the owner’s wish for an ensuite in a 1907 three-storey harbourside home in Sydney. To bring that vision to life, architectural designer Jade Young of Georgina Wilson Associates worked her magic to draw light into the semi-underground space nestled against a sandstone cliff looking out to the harbour. “We wanted to reflect the local landscape in all aspects of the house including the bathroom, choosing natural stones in neutral tones that reflect the light-filled, airy interior,” says Georgina. Now a seamless extension of the kitchen, this small laundry in a 1930s cottage in Sydney’s east is light, airy, practical and beautiful. Architects Brooke Aitken and Samantha Hayen opted for an aesthetic that is a soft mix of heritage detailing and contemporary modernism and cleverly continues the historical home’s colour and materials palette. Loads of character was top of the brief for this bathroom, which also serves as a guest cloakroom and provides access to a steam room. Cristina Repeti of design studio Hare + Klein was thrilled to take on the job. The rural home’s design was based on the aesthetic of an agricultural shed, with simple lines and a restrained palette. This minimalist style was carried through to the bathroom, where concrete floors, stone and microcement form the base.
