MUESLI BARS Prep time: 15 minutes + cooling. Cooking time: 15 minutes. Makes: 7. 2 cups (180g) rolled oats 1 cup (140g) oat flour ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ cup (40g) currants ¼ cup (40g) pepitas ½ cup (40g) shredded coconut 60ml refined coconut oil 3½ tablespoons (100ml) raw honey 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 Preheat oven to 200ºC (180ºC fan-forced). Grease and line a 28x20cm baking tray with baking paper. 2 Place oats, oat flour, baking soda, salt, currants, pepitas, coconut, coconut oil, honey and vanilla in a large bowl. Some careful planning opened this dine-in kitchen to northern sunlight and allowed for harmonious co-use of the space by the owners, a retired Melbourne couple. They enlisted their daughter, Ellie Spinks of Lande architecture, for the task “to maximise light, insert joinery and colour, and give a sense of personality and practicality”, she says. “We split the kitchen into a cooking zone at one end and a breakfast/coffee nook at the other. It meant my parents could both enjoy the kitchen at once, and enabled a small eatery table in the corner where they can read the newspaper or share breakfast together.” The harmony of the design flows through to the finishes, with soothing blush-toned joinery, complemented by the warmth of an American oak island and soft eggshell-coloured zellige splashback…

In the 1960s, Jan Clark, the founder and owner of the Lancemore Lindenderry boutique hotel, spent idyllic childhood summers at her parents’ beach house nearby on the Mornington Peninsula. “This area was little more than a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it sort of a place, with acres upon acres of fruit trees and a few houses occupied by orchardists,” she says. “Instead of pinot and chardonnay vines, this north-facing, well–drained hillside was covered in apple trees.” So, when she wanted to establish a special getaway a mere hour’s drive from Melbourne, she wanted to relive some of that fruit-tree-filled, sun-soaked past. When you’re designing a bedroom, there’s no piece of furniture more important than a bed with a proper bedhead. It sets the scene for a good night’s sleep. Bedheads are the perfect canvas for creating a soothing nest with layered linens and pillows. The right bedhead helps pull together a bedroom scheme, whether you use it to introduce a note of colour and pattern to a more muted room, or to bring together a riot of textiles. So how to choose? Laying eyes on a beautiful slab of natural stone was a defining moment for homeowner Alex. “I fell in love with Calacatta Vagli marble with cream, green, golden tones and even a hint of raspberry!” she says. These hues became the base for her new kitchen design, which she worked on with Renee Hawkins from interiors studio Heliconia to design a family friendly, open-plan space perfect for entertaining and everyday life.
