A dilapidated Victorian cottage in Richmond, with no heritage-preserving restrictions, offered a rare opportunity for its owners to knock it down and start again. Interior designer Mikayla Rose, director and principal at Heartly, was briefed on creating a space that was modern, strong and bold. For this second-floor bathroom, which is one of three in the home, she made clever use of a glass roof over the entire shower area to drench the space in sunlight and give the impression of an outdoor shower. A common challenge with renovations is how to flood a bathroom with natural light given they’re usually tucked away in the darker corners of a house. In this case, Paul Martino of Martino Leah Architects installed a custom skylight above the shower that runs the length of the bathroom and embraced the reflective properties of white tiles and glass to bounce sunlight around the space as it poured in. This bathroom doubles as a delight for guests and a functional space in which the owners’ daughter can get ready each day. Interior designer Alena Smith was up to the challenge. “We wanted the effect to be serene and somewhere one could indulge in bathing, but also a space that was special and interesting for guests,” she says. “We achieved that through the monochromatic colour palette but using different textures and materials.” It wasn’t as easy as she’s made it look. “Our biggest challenge was to achieve the monochrome, so there were several samples done for the cabinetry and plaster wall colours on-site once we understood the natural light conditions,” she says, referring to the central lightwell that’s adjacent to the bathroom. Working within a tight space meant Studio P needed to get creative with this main bathroom in a home in Sydney’s Inner West.
