Mending often evokes thoughts of tiny ladder stitches to repair a ripped seam, mending holes in jeans with matching denim patches or simply sewing a button back on. However, clothing mends don’t have to be discreet, and mending doesn’t need to be a mundane task. Canadian artist and maker Arounna Khounnoraj inspires us to view mending as an opportunity to express our creativity with what we wear. When using the fusible appliqué paper and English paper-piecing pre-cut papers, keep the paper as dry as possible and store it in the packets until required. You want it to remain stiff until you’ve glued the fabric over the edges, and the more you handle it, the softer it gets. Once you’ve glued, it doesn’t matter how soft it becomes – it is designed to remain in the work after the project is finished and once it’s washed, it resembles lightweight interfacing.
