One of embroidery artist Emillie Ferris’ favourite quotes is a Chinese proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.” Since teaching herself to embroider with a handful of materials (a hoop, thread, needle and an old pillowcase), Emillie has been passionate about embroidery and passing on the message that it’s never too late to learn this fulfilling artform. Originally working in the advertising and graphic design industry, Natalie found that when she had her second daughter, she wanted to do something that allowed her to be home with her children. Dabbling in patchwork as a hobby for years, and still having a strong affinity for graphic design, Natalie began playing with pattern designs. “Once I started playing with designs, I thought maybe this is something fun I can do and maybe make a business from,” she shares. Thread the punch needle as shown in the instruction booklet. To begin stitching, punch the needle and yarn down all the way into the weaver’s cloth. Catch the ends of the wool underneath the punched surface with one hand. This journey began way back in 2018, when we invited Tone Finnanger to be our 2020 designer. Tone had never designed a Block of the Month at that stage and set to the challenge eagerly. At the time, caravans, kombis and quilt shows were on her mind and the BOM reflected the design ideas of her then-new fabric ranges. The quilt arrived in Australia in September 2019, and the task of technical editing the instructions, preparing the templates and patterns and photographing the quilt began.
