Where do you live and work? I live on a lake in a small town in south-eastern Wisconsin, USA. Our house was originally a hunter’s cabin, complete with an outhouse. The house has been a 20-plus years work-in-progress, as my handy husband insisted on doing everything, except the electricity, by himself. The first order of business was a well, as I’m a girl 100% in favour of indoor plumbing! We added a second storey, lifted the house and put a basement underneath, where he built me my studio. Have you ever tried creating a horse design before? My mother insists that I was born a horse-lover, so it was a natural thing for me to create horse-inspired crafts from an early age. My early attempts were quite basic, but this particular design I have been working on and ‘tweaking’ for a number of years now. Do you have a new design completely formulated in your head before committing it to paper and fabric? It varies from quilt to quilt. For the majority of my quilts, I can picture it in my head and figure out all the necessary measurements, and then just start cutting and sewing. However, for this quilt, I drew sketch after sketch. How did you feel when you first started making quilts? When I first started sewing, I found the maths a little confusing. Okay, a lot confusing! I’m mostly self-taught, so rather than have anyone show me what to do, I learned through online resources. Once I’d completed my first project, I was so proud of myself and the fact that I’d turned the pile of fabric into ‘something’ that I wanted to keep making more, more and more things. If I were stuck on a desert island and granted three crafting wishes, they would be: A supply of fabrics – without these I couldn’t sew anything! A generous supply of a variety of embroidery threads – silk, wool, perle cotton, mouline etc. This would allow me to spend the days embroidering. Supply of notions – erasable pen, scissors, needles – all essential parts of sewing. A tip from me: When you travel, take a small collection of the above items so you can create while you’re away.
