WE LOVE... a sense of arrival In an architectural sleight of hand, a new landscaped path bypasses the seldom-used front door and guides guests down past the extension, encouraging them to enter at the courtyard junction between old and new. “The idea was to enter the building at the original Burley Griffin piece, so that courtyard is kind of an external lobby. There’s no real, discernible front door, but Burley Griffin didn’t have one, either! You just arrived at the building and there were a whole lot of French doors and you could walk in any one you wanted to,” explains architect Robert Weir. William Shum was the founding editor of Home Beautiful in its first two decades, from 1926 to 1946, a time when magazines had a powerful influence on how people lived. He was also my grandfather. William’s warm and friendly nature, open-minded curiosity and great interest in creative people proved to be valuable attributes for his editorship of the magazine. His great enthusiasm for life and broad-ranging interests attracted a ready and eager readership. A practical man, full of energy, he spent happy hours in his garden, carpentry workshop and poultry yard, where stories for the magazine often began. His skill as a photographer also resulted in memorable images that brought his writing to life. PRESS REPEAT The concept of timeless style is subjective, but there are design elements that transcend years and trends. Looking back through centuries of architecture and design, symmetry and proportion are the hallmarks of Classical and Neoclassical buildings, from the ancient Greeks and Romans through to the Baroque and Rococo periods. More recently in the 20th and 21st centuries, the New Classical period has become popular. It began in the 1950s in Europe and the UK as a challenge to the Modernist movement, and maintains a strong presence in building design today. Edna Walling is an icon in the Australian horticultural community. Her garden designs for some of the most prestigious homes built in the 20th century live on and are testament to her talents. Home Beautiful benefited, of course, not only from her knowledge of garden design that has featured in many a house story over the past century, but also from her wit and character as a writer and columnist on the magazine for over 20 years. Edna’s monthly articles featured in HB from 1926 and they introduced readers to a whole new way of looking at garden design. Through her imagination and creative vision, she showed people how they could be more inventive and involved in the design of their outdoor spaces, advising them to plan out their garden…

Long before the glossy images that appear on Home Beautiful’s covers today, The Australian Home Beautiful enticed its readers with beautifully illustrated images, capturing life in the ’20s and ’30s. Most of these illustrations were by Australian illustrator Frank Hedley Sanders, who walked into the editor’s office with his portfolio and suggested he illustrate one of the covers. The editor, William Shum, agreed replying, “Well, what will you do for next month’s cover?” It was a partnership that lasted 15 years. Frank’s artistry helped define the early identity of the magazine. He created richly detailed artworks that were key to the magazine’s success and boost in circulation.…

1920s The Australian Home Beautiful 1925, celebrating our uniquely antipodean ways of life. An interwar housing boom meant that thousands of new homes were launched in built and they needed decorating, pronto. With the buttoned-up Victorian era long gone, the Jazz Age saw Aussies shirking formal interiors for cosy living spaces. Plush armchairs and footstools with skirted upholstery offered respite for weary workers – usually the man of the house – or a serene spot to sit and read works by F Scott Fitzgerald or Miles Franklin. Folding privacy screens made their way here from Asia, while geometric patterns, as seen in the rug and armchair (opposite), were a key trend. INSIDE STORY Chyka & Bruce’s home Who lives here? Entertaining doyen, author and TV personality, Chyka Keebaugh, her husband Bruce and Cavoodle, Otto. They’re both founders of catering and events company The Big Group. Their adult children, Chessie, 31, and BJ, 29, are frequent visitors. How do you like to entertain?
