The Sunshine State’s breezy way of life attracted New Zealanders Jeffrey and Melanie when they considered moving abroad with their son William, 19, and daughter Jessica, 18. But it was the potential of a charming old Queenslander – albeit a fixer-upper – that sealed the deal for the family and began a 13-month renovation. “The landscaping was completely overgrown and the house was run-down and deteriorating,” says Darren James of Darren James Interiors, who helmed the project. “It all told the story of a house that had been adapted over many years without any major cohesive planning.” The once-cramped abode is now a luxurious haven, with an entirely new layout, greater functionality and a blend of modern style and heritage charm. After raising her family, inner-city living grew ever more appealing for Sandi, who swapped Sydney’s leafy North Shore for a terrace in the beating heart of the city. A short stroll to shops and restaurants, it boasted many benefits, but the interiors were not among them. “It was very plain and all beige; there was no soul, no warmth,” recalls interior designer Genine Noakes, who revived the home for Sandi, her partner Darren and her three adult daughters. There are always visitors to this Mornington Peninsula home. Family and friends, of course, as well as a steady flow of rather persistent neighbours. “The property is bordered by pasture land, so we regularly have all these beautiful shaggy cows turning up at our fence line,” says the homeowner, adding with a laugh, “You never feel lonely because they’re always popping by! One of the wonderful things we’re so grateful for is that, while we’re only on a one-acre holding, we’re surrounded by 100-acre-plus properties, which cannot be broken up. After living in Italy for six years, a couple and their three young daughters bid arrivederci to the European dream and returned to Australia. They were greeted with open arms by loved ones but the period home they bought in Melbourne didn’t extend as warm a welcome. Dark and dated with an impractical floor plan resulting from decades of mismatched renovations, the house lacked modern comfort and cohesion. Having renovated my own home, it occurred to me that though there is plenty of ‘finished product’ inspiration out there, there is not a lot of detail about the actual build journey.
