When Gary and Pauline traded six acres of sprawling countryside in Mount Macedon for a townhouse footprint, they weren’t ready to sacrifice scale or soul. “We still wanted a roomy house but a small lot of land, so double storey was obvious,” Gary explains. It’s all about efficiency when you have three children, a fact interior designer Amy Spargo of Maine House Interiors knows all too well. When the time came to renovate her family home on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, she focused on maximising space and functionality, especially in the main bathroom, which her three daughters use. To improve the layout, Amy removed a sunken bath beside the window and relocated the toilet to a less visible spot. “We installed an overhead shower and additional shower rail, so two little ones could be showered at once,” says Amy. Bold swathes of marble and brass accents create a luxe palette in this bathroom, but the stunning scheme is a world away from its pre-renovation state. Situated in a terrace house in Sydney where a couple live with their young child, the space was formerly occupied by a separate toilet and bath, which resulted in two small spaces lacking function. That’s where Kate Bath, interior designer at Blue Tea Kitchens and Bathrooms, stepped in. Spatial planning was key. Kate increased the footprint by demolishing the wall, moving the doorway and adding a sliding pocket door. Vibrant swathes of Dulux Soft Fresco coat the door to this main bathroom in Sydney’s Inner West, leading to a colourful and charming space. With nods to the Federation architecture of the home alongside modern twists, the room’s style doesn’t belong to any singular decade – an intentional move from interior designer Brett Mickan. The homeowners, a couple with two teenagers, wanted the space to belong in their period property, yet still feel modern. As such, “Fresh Federation” was Brett’s guide as he created the bathroom, originally a bedroom, from scratch. Transforming an outdated ensuite into a modern, light-filled retreat was the aim for this lavish makeover in Melbourne’s Bayside area. Part of a larger renovation, the owners wanted to enhance their home’s Edwardian features, while injecting a dash of contemporary indulgence, especially in the ensuite. “They dreamt of creating an oasis with ample natural light, soft textures and luxurious finishes,” says designer Georgette Criticos of GIA Renovations, who reimagined the space. The original ensuite was functional, but out of sync with the homeowners’ vision for their space. “It was all cream and brown tones, a very ’90s-style renovation,” says Georgette. “They wanted to move away from a stock standard style of bathroom and make it something special.” Georgette first focused on optimising the layout, prioritising natural light and free-flowing movement.…

The bathrooms in this 1940s, Georgian-inspired Burradoo cottage in NSW Southern Highlands, are decorated with the same palette of fresh neutrals and greens that have been carried throughout the rest of the home. “It was the perfect palette to bring the outside in,” says homeowner and interior designer Georgia Boyd of The Classic Outfitter interior design studio. An elegant parents’ retreat on the third level of this 1930s Brisbane family home encompasses two separate suites, each including a king-size bedroom, ensuite, walk-in robe and a shared sitting room, study and terrace.
