OLD-WORLD WONDER This old home in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs held great appeal for its new custodians when they first set eyes on it. “We were definitely downsizing when we bought it and loved how close it is to everything,” says the homeowner. “It’s just a minute’s walk from the main street and is surrounded by pretty stone terraces and houses.” However, the interior had been stripped of charm in an earlier renovation, so its new owner drew on her background in furniture and homewares retail and engaged interior designer Cameron Kimber to reinstate its heritage heart. Fadia and Charles had been hoping to buy in a picturesque pocket of Western Sydney for over seven years when their dream home hit the market. Situated on a big block and in the bungalow style the couple love, it seemed perfect for their family of five. MOODY HUES While this home is in the Northern Rivers of NSW, it emanates a European air, influenced by the owners’ travels. Margaret and Peter moved here 14 years ago and have transformed the place into a home to welcome family and a friendly guesthouse. “We’ve been very fortunate to be able to travel through different parts of Europe to see first-hand the extraordinary use of colour there,” says Margaret. There’s a sense of harmony that comes with perfectly balancing a series of contrasts and contradictions. For homeowners Tylah and Dylan, who work as a landscape architect and builder respectively, this was the challenge they faced when creating a garden from scratch and trying to infuse it with maturity, “Like it had always been there,” explains Tylah. The husband and wife duo bought their Inner East Melbourne block in November 2020 but it wasn’t until three years later, when a renovation and total energy retrofit of the house was complete, that they finally got started on the garden. “There were no notable landscape features besides this beautiful golden elm tree out the back,” says Tylah. One by one, they break the ocean’s surface to spray clouds of air from their blowholes and wave their splendid tails in an overpowering display of beauty. It’s prime whale watching season in Los Cabos, which is situated on the southern end of the Baja California peninsula, and I’m onboard a luxurious yacht in the Sea of Cortez with a mimosa in hand. Here, humpback whales migrate to mate and give birth in Mexico’s warm waters each winter from December to March. The magic of this time of year permeates my dreamy week at Chileno Bay Resort, from the welcome token of a wooden whale carved by Sonoran Desert artisans to the pair of binoculars left in my ocean-view room.…

Nestled on the banks of the Parramatta River in Sydney’s Inner West, this bright and breezy apartment represents a fresh start for owner Anne. “When I decided to renovate I had recently ended a nine-year relationship,” says Anne. “These renovations reflect a different stage in my life, I wanted to come back to me.” Charged with transforming the compact two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment was interior designer Adam Scougall. “Anne wanted a really light, airy, almost beachy vibe,” says Adam. “Opposite to the previous palette, which was dramatic, but very dated.” Pursuing a calm and soothing environment in keeping with the apartment’s riverside location, Anne’s brief centred on creating a space that reflected her nurturing personality. “I wanted to walk in and immediately feel a warm hug,” she says. When Emma and David purchased their Gold Coast home sight unseen in 2015, it took a leap of faith. “We were living in Melbourne at the time and looking for a new base where we’d raise a family,” says Emma. “This place ticked the key boxes as it was close to family support, had a fantastic canal-front location and we knew it had been solidly built.” Although already dated when they bought it, they didn’t race to renovate the 2000s build.
