PEACHY KEEN This charming abode was nothing but derelict land before Georgia and Tom (above) bought it and built a home for their young family (above, left to right), Kingston, Rex, Teddi and Coco. Taking a blank canvas and creating a design that was functional and homely proved tricky, so they enlisted the expert vision of Kate Walker and the KWD team. Alongside clever design decisions, elegant finishes and craftmanship, Kate elevated the couple’s pink-toned colour palette. Cosiness is exactly what you want from an alpine retreat, but when ‘cosiness’ means ‘cramped’, it loses its appeal somewhat. This was the primary challenge faced by interior designer Kate Walker of KWD when she began redesigning this two-bedroom Mt Buller apartment to fit a family of five – including three exceptionally tall sons. “With my understanding of snow life – days spent on the slopes and evenings spent at home – I knew having five tall people in a tiny apartment was going to be a challenge. Careful consideration had to be given to the layout, the storage, and how everyone would integrate with the space,” explains Kate about the project. Feeling a kinship with your interior designer is surely the first step to a successful project – and the owners of this Mt Buller apartment didn’t have to look too hard to find a connection with their designer, Kate Walker. “The apartment in question was one that my fiancé and I had looked at purchasing, so I had an intimate knowledge of the interior, and of the potential,” says Kate. “We didn’t have the chance to purchase the apartment, so the joy I derived vicariously by being able to deliver the owners their dream ski home was immense.” In addition, the homeowners’ tastes and vision for the property aligned perfectly with Kate’s own. “It was definitely a passion project,” she says. Eagle-eyed Home Beautiful readers may find something familiar about this Mornington Peninsula home. Back in 2019, we revealed the first stage of the substantial renovation of Kelli and David’s property. The couple engaged Kate Walker of KWD to undertake a two-year makeover of the 1970s home, transforming it into a warm family home.
