Is there anything more delicious than finding a sunny spot to warm you in the depths of winter? When retirees Xin and Hong enlisted interior designer Jodie Carter to transform their 1890s home on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, it was always going to be an epic project, spanning multiple levels and several years. “It involved a complete gut and interior renovation, which included a private ensuite for Hong,” explains Jodie. “The home’s raked ceiling and existing windows meant the layout couldn’t be changed, so we had to look for other ways to make it feel more open.” Jodie designed a shower nook and bespoke joinery to suit the petite proportions, nodding to the harbour setting with soft blues. Style notes A sweeping curved ceiling creates a niche effect above the bespoke vanities and mirrors by Signature Joinery. A mid the wide, leafy streets of Adelaide, between the bustling CBD and picturesque Adelaide Hills, a 1920s bungalow gets a modern makeover. With the goal of bringing the family home in line with 21st century living, interior designer Georgie Shepherd created a contemporary extension complete with an ensuite, intended as a retreat for the owners, who are parents of three. The shower, decked out in matte white finger tiles from Cerbis Ceramics, is the star of the show. “An open, curved shower was an integral part of the layout as this helped to elongate the space,” says Georgie. Like many families who lived through the Covid lockdowns, Jess and Ed discovered a whole new appreciation for home life. With the arrival of their daughter Hazel, now three, they wanted to create a home that felt like a refuge, with some key musts on the wish list: open-plan living, generous spaces to entertain, access to gardens front and rear, a home office and a couple of little luxuries like a home gym, sauna and swimming pool. When Olli Ella co-founderand director Chloe Brookman hops on the phone to catch up with Home Beautiful, she sounds like she’s been having a busy morning. “I’m laying tiles!” she says. “There’s a side of the house with original concrete slabs that we were going to leave. When entering the Brisbane home of Lloyd Hodgkinson and his husband David, there are no prizes for guessing the couple aren’t minimalists. Greeted with a jungle of indoor plants, colourful walls, a profusion of pattern and antique finds, their personalities and passions shine within their cosy Queenslander. “It’s maximalist, biographical, classic and, most importantly, comfortable,” says Lloyd, who’s known for the bright, individualised homes he creates as principal of Oliver Mark Interiors. “This is our first home and, incredibly, it was the first home we inspected when we began searching. In keeping with the theme of the 2024 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS), I thought I would take you into the exciting world of Show Gardens. For the past five years, I have worked behind the scenes at MIFGS alongside fellow designers and landscapers to create beautiful gardens – and this year was no exception. Set in the world heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens, one of the greatest things about the five-day festival – on top of its stunning floral offerings, of course – is its renown as the largest horticultural show in the Southern Hemisphere. The event lets visitors view emerging lifestyle trends, breathtaking inspiration for seasoned landscapers and novices alike, and spectacular show gardens. GET the LOOK Dated black porcelain tiles and beige floors greeted interior designer Georgia Ezra of Studio Ezra when she first laid eyes on this main bedroom ensuite. A couple with three children had bought the Melbourne house and were eager to update it to reflect their own personal style, with help from Georgia and her builder husband, Richie, of Morris and Co Construction. “She’s quite a striking individual,” says Georgia of the owner. “I think her home really reflects that.” Since this was intended as the family’s forever home, there was a desire to renovate once and renovate well, with high quality materials that would stand the test of time. Designer’s tip “When renovating older bathrooms, you can overdo it if you’re making everything too styled in terms of traditional tapware and joinery,” says Danielle. “Our design was pared back. Located in The Hills district on the semi-regional fringes of Sydney’s north-west, interior designer Antonina Scotti’s family home is the epitome of relaxed modernity. A five-bedroom, six-bathroom residence on a peaceful two-hectare block, Antonina says the ensuite is a personal highlight. “I love it,” she shares. “It’s one of my favourite rooms in the house.” Surprisingly, it was Antonina’s husband Anthony, a property developer, who was the one to request floor-to-ceiling marble in the space. “The home was mainly a collaborative effort,” explains Antonina. “But the ensuite brief was really from Anthony – he wanted the luxury of marble walls and slabs from top to bottom.” With a towering 3.6-metre ceiling height, this was a challenging job, but well worth it according to the couple and their family. “We all…
