As with many families, Nelson and Mandy dreamt of creating a forever home for their children, Jacob, 11, Isaac, nine, and Paige, seven. But given the current state of the climate, they wanted to ensure the build, and their lifestyles within it, contributed to a more sustainable future and, as such, a more livable world for the generations of their family still to come. After years of renting, the opportunity to bring their visions to life came in 2019 when the couple bought a property in north-east Melbourne. I am not an expert on eco-friendly design, and I admit I have a lot to learn. I have a personal awareness, commitment, and interest in specifying products that are locally made as well as reusing old pieces of furniture in the rooms that I design for my clients. I also have a small understanding of the worldwide push to make furniture and materials out of ocean plastics, and I’m aware of the great initiative in India to recycle old clothing, which is being made into new materials. This paradise near the water began as a distant dream for its owners, married couple Debbie and Sheldon. “We used to walk through Mount Pleasant as boyfriend and girlfriend,” says Debbie. “There’s a particular street we’d go up. We knew that in redesigning the house, we wanted to express the spirit of the land, both in its aesthetic and in its lifestyle,” say Tatiana and Tyson of their Mallorcan home, Finca Alfabia. Come springtime, Stephanie and Jason’s 0.6-hectare property swells with pretty colour, buzzing bees, and a sweet gum blossom perfume. Their homestead is located on a corner parcel in Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula, in a suburb where the bush meets the sea and outdoor living is favoured. Stephanie grew up in the area, and Jason hails from Warrnambool, and together they run King’s Gardens & Pools, a thriving landscape design business that works within a wide range of garden styles. Four years ago, Gera de Wet and her husband Johann moved to De Wetshof, a celebrated wine estate nestled in Robertson, South Africa, which has been in Johann’s family since 1954.
