What are some tapware trends? “The pandemic shifted how we live and strengthened the desire for a connection to nature. As a result, we saw a rise in neutral and earthy colour palettes, including the use of greenery such as internal courtyards or pot plants. Brushed brass tapware (pictured) pairs perfectly with a natural scheme and continues to be the most favoured choice due to its timeless style. The term dream kitchen conjures up visions of runway-length benchtops and butler’s pantries that hold more than Mary Poppins’ handbag – exciting stuff indeed – but what really interests me is the concept of an ideal kitchen for the home you’re living in. We can’t all fit a three-metre island or have a built-in sous vide, but what we can do is maximise the space we have to function for the people who use it. My dream kitchen is the one you find under the stairs in old houses – both practical, simple and filled with family and friends sharing good times. Those under-the-stairs kitchens can best be seen in period dramas, such as Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs. The heritage beach boxes of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula are highly sought after and tightly held, passed down from generation to generation, so it’s rare to catch a glimpse inside one (unless you’re the lucky owner). The owners of this Mount Martha beach box, a family of four with a country property 20 minutes away from the beach, entrusted interior designer, Amy Spargo of Maine House Interiors, to transform the hut from an empty shell to a beautiful retreat where the owners can enjoy long days by the ocean. Amy was tasked with a refresh of the decor, refitting the interior with joinery and lining the internal ceiling to make it weatherproof, and painting the facade. The owner of this sanctuary on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Lynne, is a collector of design ideas. She has gleaned images from magazines, Insta and Pinterest for years, room by room, and now they magically intermingle in her dream home. But you can have too much of a good thing. “I am an OCD, detail kind of person,” confesses Lynne. So she asked interior designers Heliconia and architects Cradle Design to fashion those diverse strands into this inviting four-bedroom, two-storey retreat.
