Prior to its renovation, this laundry in a holiday rental on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula was a larger space with sliding doors that robbed the home of additional living areas. Kate Walker, founder and director of KWD, sought to right this wrong when she oversaw its renovation in March 2021. Originally designed by Nicholas Day Architects, the generous laundry was reconfigured into a small yet functional footprint. “The laundry still needed to accommodate all the modern necessities of family living,” says Kate. “We increased the bench space and created a skylight for extra light and ventilation and centered the sink with tall joinery on either side, which includes drying cupboards, broom storage and a lockable storage zone.” The blue teal joinery is in Dark Newport Blue by Porter’s Paints and complements…

An annoyingly resilient weed was the catalyst for Simone Jelley’s business, Pretty Produce. After being made redundant from her job as a newspaper photographer, Simone began focusing on her vegetable garden at the home she shared with her husband, Dave, and son, Thomas, on Queensland’s Macleay Island. “I’d been ripping out this weed and screaming in frustration with fists in the air,” Simone laughs. When interior designer Kate Lawrence and her partner Luke commenced their knockdown and rebuild project in the Sydney suburb of Matraville, the design soon became a tale of two houses. On one side of the newly built duplex, the intention was to rent it out, so the couple played it safe with classic design. But for the home they wanted to live in, on the other side, Kate and Luke took a chance on a darker colour scheme for their joinery choices, particularly in the kitchen.
